Idaho Anti-Gay Amendment Gains House Approval
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon06/02/020606idaho.htm

The Idaho House of Representatives voted Monday to approve a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage in Idaho.

"You cannot make people moral by legislation," the sponsor of the measure, Rep. Lawrence Denney, R-Midvale, told his colleagues on the House floor. "But all of our social laws are legislated morality. Laws against murder and rape, robbery and incest, are all social laws. These laws are boundaries that we as a society say must not be crossed.

"If we don't set boundaries, and let everyone do what is right in their own eyes, we lose our entire structure; we have chaos."

Denney's proposal provides that "a marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized" in Idaho. To be placed on the ballot in November, it must win approval from two-thirds of the House and the Senate. It won that easily in the House Monday on a 53-17 vote.

1. why? because men and women procreate?
Is that what makes them moral?

I don't get it. Hey, Representative Denney. I understand that "morality" in murder, and robbery, and incest involves removing someone else's freedom or property. How does "morality" in domestic arrangements involve anything to do with your life?

In fact it could be argued that if the basis for "morality" is removing someone else's freedeom, life or property, that the purrsuit of your made up "anti-gay" morality is immoral.

2. Comparing same-sex marriage to murder and rape??!!??

Yeah, let's just lump all of them under one big group. :sarcasm:

I try not to be surprised at the bigotry in this "debate", but it sometimes still boggles my mind.

3. Yeah, that's what sets my despair-o-meter spinning, too.
What assholes. What sanctimonious garbage. This is the "homosexuality is a sin" meme at work. And it's everywhere. It even shows up here on DU. One of the most powerfully destructive weapons in the homophobe arsenal. :grr:

5. The House vote is not the issue - we have the votes in the Senate

6. Fast tracked for a reason
Sure, the votes are there to stop it in the Senate...unless Andreason, Goedde, and Compton buckle under pressure....

This bill is fastracked, and when it fails, the proponents WILL propose an advisory vote to add a question on the November ballot that would essentially be a statewide poll of "should Idaho be able to vote on this?"

This would drive out the right wing voters, and threaten seats of dems and moderate republicans...and if their question "passes" it would give the right wing crackpots all the ammo they need.

(ps....speaking of ammo, there is also a proposed constitutional amendment in Idaho that would make it ok to shoot any animal you want...right wing "morality" voters plus NRA nuts....sure to be a great election season...dont forget to vote!)

7. It's the same old KKKRove strategy all over again.
It'll make sure they get the biggest possible GOP-conservative base turnout in the general election. It seems to work every time. They're getting ready to go down the same track here in Virginia too.
