Same-Sex Marriage Plan Draws Protest (in MD) |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 09:38 AM by MountainLaurel
Under the gaze of a cast-iron sculpture of Thurgood Marshall, hundreds of gay couples chanted, "We shall not be moved," and urged Maryland lawmakers to fend off fresh efforts to ban same-sex marriage.
Aggressive lobbying from Equality Maryland, the advocacy group that organized the boisterous rally in Annapolis last night, helped prevent passage of such a ban last month. At last night's rally, gay men, lesbians and their supporters braved the winter chill to champion what many said was the next chapter of the civil rights movement. There was unmistakable civil rights imagery -- chants and songs that echoed those used to call for racial equality and speeches from leaders such as former congressman and NAACP president Kweisi Mfume, who is running in the Maryland Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.
"I know that gay bashing and immigrant bashing and union bashing at the end of the day rob us of our moral authority," Mfume told the crowd.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/13/AR2006021301918.html

to see people who can't claim to be impacted in the tiniest way by somebody else's marriage working so hard to keep it from happening.
When you reduce their argument about why they should have a right to tell other people they can't get married down to basic principle, you will find every time that they have a problem with gays even existing at all.
If you want to show them for the petty bigots they are you have to lead them that far, because the fact is that by birth or choice, we EXIST, and there isn't a god damn thing they can do about it.

I meant, rhetorically, who is against same sex marriage.
Sorry, poor phrasing on my part, not poor reading comprehension. :hi:

Good KKKristian folk who believe that the world will end and hetero couples around the state will rush to the courthouse for a divorce if gays can suddenly file joint tax returns and have the same rights as straights.

5. 66% of Maryland's senate candidates support marriage equality |
|
Mfume (the Democrat) and the Libertarian-Green candidate.
Only the GOPers are against it.
