Love Isn't Just For Breeders
Love Isn't Just For Breeders

February 8, 2006

Tyler Luna, 18, who is from Terry, Miss., and Brandon Tate, 21, who is from Baton Rouge, La., are approaching their first anniversary. They live together in Brandon.

How did you meet?

Tyler: At a friend’s house in Baton Rouge, La.

How did it proceed then?

Brandon: There’s a dance club in Baton Rouge called Splash that a lot of gays and lesbians go to, so that night after we got back from eating at the restaurant, I asked him if he wanted to go there with me.

Tyler: I think we actually connected at the restaurant. He tried to look big and bad and pay everybody’s bill. It took them forever to run his credit card, and everybody else went outside. I sat there with him while he was waiting for his receipt and we got to talking.

Were you both single at the time?

Brandon: Yes

Tyler: Single and not looking.

1. Please tell me that breeder isn't a nasty way of saying heterosexual
Love is in all forms. But don't demean any love, period.

3. Sammy...
...instead of letting this word bother you, take the sting out of it like the gay community took the sting out of queer. Just like we are proud queers, you could become proud breeders.

4. Do not most gays find "queer" offensive
when it comes from a heterosexual?

5. We used to!
But we took the sting out of it by using it ourselves. Granted there are still some in the community who still sting when they hear it, but the majority don't.

Remember the old saying that sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never harm me?

6. I don't find it offensive.
At first it took me by surprise. After all the names the GLBT community has been called by those who are not GLBT or those who support them it is pretty darned harmless. It does not seem to me exactly an insult since it is used for both male and female. I FAR prefer it to "straight" which implies that they are crooked.

15. You know, Hamas uses the same logic when blowing up Jews
We're not all gay-bashing idiots. I'm not. I find the term painting me with an extremely wide brush! Be careful about the road, unless you are on that road too.

Remember, intolerance doesn't end with more intolerance.

16. it's an inside joke
those who are on the inside aren't offended - welcome inside.

Anyway, it's "vernacular". Believe me if someone was out to offend heterosexuals, you would know, but it probably won't be one of us.

12. It is.
Some gays use it in protest against those who use derogatory names against them--sort of a tit-for-tat deal. Not exactly mature but it has its uses.

7. Coincidence...
In that as a childfree person (one who does not have nor wants kids), we also use the term, "breeders," and this could very well have been an article about childfree relationships from the title. We don't get half the flak that homosexuals get, but we're still looked at as inferior by breeders.

I do wish the headline had been more responsible but the story is such a sweet Valentine's day story.
