S.C. NAACP Leader Calls On Black Churches To Oppose Anti-Gay Amendment
(Columbia, South Carolina) Black leaders, including those in the church, have an obligation to oppose a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in South Carolina, the Rev. Nelson B. Rivers III, chief operating officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said Saturday.

"This is not about sexual orientation or about a lifestyle, this is about fairness and equality," Nelson said during an event sponsored by the South Carolina Progressive Network.

Around 200 people attended the group's Democracy Day event, which focused a variety of topics including immigration, education and same sex marriage.

"Equality is what we must stand on. We cannot be afraid and surrender the higher ground for moral principle," said Rivers, who encouraged the crowd to see the debate as a civil rights issue.

1. AMEN!
Rev. Rivers announcement was a huge, very welcome, surprise. I'm so happy we joined the NAACP a couple of weeks ago. For those of us fighting the "Family Discrimination Amendment" in SC this announcement is a sign of the tide turning our way and that our grassroots campaign is working!

2. This is great!
Sharpton and Jackson spoke in favor of tolerance at a meeting of black ministers earlier this year but I could never find a link to a transcript or the outcome. This is particularly heartening considering the position taken by some of the King children.
