Want to be better parents? A few tips. |
|
It's very hard for kids of gays to live with closeted parents; to be expected to keep their secrets. If you have kids, move to a place where it is safe to be out -- if at all possible.
If you already have kids when you decide to come out, don't forget that they're not just going to automatically adjust. Remember all the time it took you to make up your mind to out yourself? Well, your child needs some time to get used to the idea, too.
Make sure any new relationship with a new partner is long term and very solid before you and your partner move in together.
Don't be like the parent I heard about who left her husband, moved to another conservative town, put her kid in a new high school where she had no friends, and immediately moved her new partner into the house -- expecting her daughter to just deal with it.
As much as you possibly can, try to see things from your kids perspective. They're going to be experiencing all the prejudice that you are, and they're probably not prepared for it.
