Any Rush fans here? (not Limbaugh)
I'm a straight, white guy in the deep South. And I just want you all to know that there are people "like me" that empathize with you. I can't begin to understand what it's like, especially in certain areas, to be gay or lesbian. I just wanted to drop in and let you know that there are some many of us that deplore how you are treated by some. I just don't understand the hate.

(I hope this doesn't come across as patronizing.)

And I'll share this song by my favorite band of all time -- Rush. "Nobody's Hero."
I knew he was different in his sexuality
I went to his parties as a straight minority
It never seemed a threat to my masculinity
He only introduced me to a wider reality
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that he was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

But he's nobody's hero
Saves a drowning child
Cures a wasting disease
Hero...lands the crippled airplane
Solves great mysteries
Hero...not the handsome actor
Who plays a hero's role
Hero...not the glamor girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
If anybody's buying
Nobody's hero

I didn't know the girl, but I knew her family
All their lives were shattered in a nightmare of brutality
They try to carry on, try to bear the agony
Try to hold some faith in the goodness of humanity
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that she was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

But she's nobody's hero
Is the voice of reason against the howling mob
Hero...is the pride of purpose
In the unrewarding job
Hero...not the champion player
Who plays the perfect game
Hero...not the glamor boy
Who loves to sell his name
Everybody's buying
Nobody's hero

As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that you were gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

But he's nobody's hero
Saves a drowning child
Cures a wasting disease
Hero...lands the crippled airplane
Solves great mysteries
Hero...not the handsome actor
Who plays a hero's role
Hero...not the glamor girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
If anybody's buying
Nobody's hero

Hero

4. Well, Mahogany Rush isn't that bad either, I guess
But this Rush is really good. I didn't care for the main lyricist's brief flirtation with Ayn Rand back in the seventies, but otherwise they are very good.

3. Cool!
The first time I went to a Rush concert was in 1982 in Birmingham. The last time was in Nashville almost two years ago. And a handful in between. They really are amazing musicians! I hope they come around again soon.

Have you heard the bootleg from that Nashville show? It's incredible. The best bootleg ever. The sound quality is better than most commercial live albums. "30 Years Strong" is, I think, the name of it. I especially like "Dreamline" on it. It's great! Try to check it out if you haven't.

Good luck to you! :hi:

5. Syrinx, thanks for your kind words. I always have to remind
myself that of course there are accepting people who live in the south.

For gay people, it's all too easy to just hate the red states and the people who live in those places because so many try to make our lives miserable.

You're clearly not one of them, and for that, thank you. ;)

7. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Syrinx,

I do not think there is ever enough that the gay community truly does to acknowledge the GLBT supporters such as yourself, especially in the deep South. I have so much respect for people like you who actually understand that we are just normal people like everyone else on this chunk of rock we call home. It is supporters like you that will help the world to understand. Thank you again!
