I just got done watching you on Primetime. You know what makes me maddest about you? It is the fact that people like me help make life for people like you possible. We worked our asses off to get laws changed to prevent people like you from getting fired. We worked our asses off to get states to permit gay adoption. We worked our asses off to bring civil unions to Vermont. We worked our asses off to bring marriage to Massachusetts. When you get to marry your partner, ie when the laws catch up with you, it will be because of us.

It was almost touching when you described your mother crying over what you might face for being gay. Then I thought of who it is that makes it so hard to be gay. It is the very people you chose to align yourself with. The hatefilled heartless Religious right that propelled your dad to the White House hates your guts. They are why the laws are behind you and will likely forever be. The judges you worked so hard to give Bush the right to install are why it unlikely I will ever see the law catch up before I die.

You went on to say that "I don't have the luxory to be a single issue voter on gay rights.". The funny thing is it is just the opposite. It is I who doesn't have the luxory not to be a single issue voter on gay rights. I don't have a powerful dad who can give me a 6 figure job from which I can't be fired. I can't sell my connection with him to corporate America or write a book to make myself wealthy. Instead I teach in a district which could, and for all I know would, fire me tomorrow if I told them I were gay today. It is you who have luxories, not I madam.

You are worse than a parasite. Not only do you steal strength from us you give strength to our enemies. People like you have likely made it impossible for a gay person born last century to ever be treated as a full citizen of this land. Think about that Mary. Because of you, and your fellow travelers, the Supreme Court will be hostile terain for at least two and maybe three generations.

You used being a lesbian to help your dad and then had the audacity to complain when Democrats pointed it out. If you feel guilty for having sold yourself out, look in the mirror. You chose to do it. You took the 30 pieces of silver. We made your life possible and you sold us out. Don't blame us for that.

i would also say however, that i understand full well what it takes to learn to respect ones self for what one is. It is not an easy path, and she may be struggling with it. Some women of the upper SES, similarly, want to deny other women their rights.
Some African-Americans, who have benefited from Affirmative Action, want to pull the ladder up behind them and prevent others from enjoying the same benefits.

What will Mary do if justice is ever actually served? Who will insure the continuation of her privileges?
Sadly, the only thing that would probably cause her to change her stand would be a CYA attempt -- not a conscience.
