Is anyone watching Mary Cheney on David Letterman?
There was some concern earlier this year about David Letterman using Brokeback Mountain in comedy sketches earlier this year. I think he's quite redeemed himself, if not proven that he is sympathetic. He's totally kicking Mary Cheney's ass right now!

What I cannot believe is how skilled she is in backtracking, avoiding direct answers, and referring to her book for answers instead of honestly and directly responding. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it?

3. watched it earlier
Dave is definitely not homophobic.

Barbara Gaines, executive producer of the Late Show, is a lesbian.

Hell, I'd consider voting for Letterman for some office or other if I could. He seems like a very moral and fair guy to me. But of course he makes fun of just about everyone.

5. Thanks. I didn't know that.
I defended him after those comedy sketches aired. He's always seemed as if he takes a irreverent stance with his comedy that doesn't leave anyone out but when it comes right down to it, when he has to get serious on someone, such as in his interview with Limbaugh or O'Reilly, he doesn't let them get away with their usual evasiveness. Good for him.

By the way, Barbara Gaines has worked for him ever since his old "Late Night" show started back in 1982, I think. And he manages to get his staff on-air quite often. This is so that they can get a little extra cash. Each time Barbara or Biff or Alan appear on-air, they get something like $800 (I don't really know the exact figure). That's because of some union rules. "Daddy" is just taking care of them. :)

And, yes, I think he does some of the best substantial interviews on US television. I think his show is much more interesting when he has on political figures -- even especially ones I disagree with and dislike. I get tired of movie stars.

EDIT: I meant to say that I can't agree with people faulting Dave for doing Brokeback Mountain jokes. It got overdone, by just about all mainstream comedians. But come on, a gay western is ripe for comedy. I don't think it's been done since Andy Warhol made his masterpiece of the topic. ;)

8. You are probably right about Letterman but.....
>>>>Dave is definitely not homophobic.

this logic is wack. Lots of people ( I mean 'LOTS' ! ) work with, and even hire gay people and are, nonetheless, *hugely* homophobic.

Happens all the time.

14. I guess you make a good point
I strongly doubt that Gaines could have gone from intern to executive producer if her boss was a gay-hating prick. I guess it's possible though.

9. I wonder if she is the one that Bush cleaned his glasses on
during a Letterman appearance. I would have slapped him silly.

15. I think that was Maria Pope
I think Gore should've used that clip in an ad back in 2000. It shows just what Bush thinks of the "common folk."

4. Dave, like many comedians (including Jon Stewart) likes to make fun
of everybody and everything. Bacically, whatever is currently in the spotlight.

7. Yup. I was one of those people you're talking about. I thought Dave
had crossed the line from comedy to mocking gays and lesbians in a mean way and I was getting sick of all his gay shit.

However, I agree with you....I'm convinced now that he is an equal opportunity "make-fun of people-er"

He seemed very frustrated when he kept asking her why in the world has she not been more of a voice for gays rights....deciding instead to put everything in a book to make money.

What a liar she is. She's so pathetic.

Is there anyone in the gay community who doesn't wish she'd just climb back under her rock and shut the fuck up????

Thanks Letterman :loveya:

12. No, I don't wish she'd climb back under a rock.
I would like her to do a "David Blaine" in a big round aquarium and make her f**ked up book disappear up her sorry ass.

10. I've seen a couple of these Mary Cheney book hawking interviews
and surprisingly, Dave's was the best.

He did not let up on her. He kept pushing and pushing to the point where you could tell she was frustrated and uncomfortable. He wanted her to acknowledge the hypocrisy of being a lesbian and working to elect the most viciously anti gay administration in the history of the country. She kept dodging and weaving, not very artfully - she would make a fine press secretary.

11. Yes, you're right
He seemed to sense just when to back off and try a different tack, but not drop the subject entirely. After a while, her evasive "as I said in my book" blocking made the audience giggle, but he stayed on track and didn't allow her to feel made fun of.

I watched Jay Leno instead.

I'm sorry to say but that's how I honestly feel about her.
