7. From Merriam-Webster online
Main Entry: di·va
Pronunciation: 'dE-v&
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural divas or di·ve /-(")vA/
Etymology: Italian, literally, goddess, from Latin, feminine of divus divine, god

Also, the word has been used since the Renaissance to mean a leading woman (originally, a man who specialized in playing leading women) who is greatly respected, so "diva" in this context is entirely correct.

It is also used to mean a woman (or reasonable facsimile thereof) who thinks herself above mere mortals; think Dutchess from "Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends."

17. yes, I voted for Judy.
I considered voting for Bette, but I thought that would be disrepectful. Plus she's not tragic enough, a drama queen gots to have some drama.

A beautiful one of a kind voice. Sadly, a somewhat rocky road career and life. None the less, she was one of the greats! I listen to one of her songs everyday.

She was waaaaay hot in her day!

J-Lo has a booty made for spanking!

If you like trashy white girls (which I do) Britney is hot, and she needs a spanking. It will be interesting to see how times treats her. It could go either way.

Ok, I'll stop now.

Whitney, and the KING of the 80's.......

PRINCE!

I don't know if he officially qualifies, but dammit, he should! He *rented* a house from an NBA player, painted it purple, put in purple and black carpet, put his Prince symbols all over the place, remodeled so he could put his beauty salon chairs downstairs...and is getting sued for it.

Sounds like a diva to me!

And "When Doves Cry" is still the best song ever made. That is all.

12. La Barbra
She showed her diva hood decades ago...with "Funny Girl". And she's conquered it all...films, Broadway, music, television. AND she's a great liberal Democrat, to boot. She's persevered all of these decades. She is the quintessential diva. :-)

I'm glad I can find lighthearted stuff here. When I come here I get so overloaded. I feel like I'm not doing enough to help the cause. Like things will never be the same if the shrub gets one more SC justice. And then I find posts like this and I know our side knows how to laugh and lighten up, unlike the repukes. Thanks all, for a needed lift.

26. Hey, man!
Yeah. It brought me up short and made me realize there was a whole lot out there I didn't know about yet. My parents, out of their depth, trying to answer my question about why she would have taken those pills.

Stonewall was about to happen, and I was in a car heading for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. To tell the truth, I wouldn't have been much help.

I also remember hearing "What do you get when you fall in love" over and over on the radio and driving right by the new St. Louis Arch (within a mile of my future partner).

A few years later, I remember right where I was when I heard that Cass Elliot had died.

Well, enough of that! How are you doing?

I went out to take out the trash, and saw her photo on the front page of an old newspaper that was being thrown out. I recall sitting there in the garage, reading about her and her short, sad life. There she was in the photo, dressed as Dorothy, eighteen years old, not knowing what was ahead but already on that road.

Years later, when I was in University, I was looking for the gay section of LA, wandering around West Hollywood, and saw a picture clipped out of a magazine of--Judy Garland! Taped to the inside of the window of a dry cleaners, of all things. It was just too wacky, as if someone was saying "hey, you idiot. You found it already. You're safe here."

40. "I Might Have Been Queen"
I Might Have Been Queen

I`m a new pair of eyes
Every time i am born
An original mind
Because i just died
I`m scanning the horizon
For someone recognizing
That i might have been queen
For every sun that sets
There is a new one dawning
For every empire crushed
There is a new nation
Let
the waters rise
I have ridden each tide
From the gates
of the city
Where the first born died

And i
might have been queen
I remember the girl in the fields
with no name
She had a love
Oh but the rivers won`t
stop for me

I`m a new pair of eyes
An original mind
With my senses of old
And the heart of a giant
And i`m searching through the wreckage
For some
recollection
That i might have been queen
For every
sage that falls
There is an ancient child

And i
might have been queen
I remember the girl in the fields
with no name
She had a love
Oooooh but the rivers
won`t stop for me
No, the rivers won`t stop for me

I look up to the stars
With my perfect memory
I look
through it all
And my future`s no shock to me
I look
down but i see no tragedy
I look up to my past
A
spirit running free
I look down and i`m there in history
I`m a soul survivor

A soul survivor
On the
river
But it won`t stop
I`m a soul survivor
On
the river
But it won`t stop
I might have been queen
I know the secret combination
I`m a soul survivor

"When the Heartache is Over"

Great selections all for you, but I chose that one because it was written specifically for her and is about her, even though rather fantasized. It describes her ability to survive and surpass.

PS: I'm totally there with you on "Goldeneye." A close second is "Goldfinger."

For sheer, over the top, divaness it is tough to beat Patti. I also have to give props to Sylvester. Tina Turner has already been mentioned, and I have some Tina CD's in my car right now. I rarely go through a day without Tina. If I still have legs like that in my 60's, I'll be a happy man.
