Calf. Assembly Sinks To Homophobic Shouting Match

(Sacramento, California) It was far from the Assembly's finest hour and perhaps the clearest indication that this is an election year as conservative Republicans lashed out in homophobic outbursts on the floor of the chamber.

During debate on amendments to California's domestic partner law that would allow same-sex couples to file joint state tax returns Assemblymember Jay La Suer (R-La Mesa) accused supporters of the measure of promoting "the homosexual agenda."

He then suggested the bill would abuse children by teaching them that homosexuality "is an acceptable lifestyle."

Most Democrats were visibly agitated by La Suer's characterization.

Assemblymember Lloyd Levine (D-Sherman Oaks) admonished La Suer for what he called biased remarks and told him that "the real homosexual agenda is simple equality and freedom from discrimination."

That's the thing they really don't understand at a fundamental level. We're not a bunch of heterosexuals who just chose to live together one day because it was fashionable, and just as soon as you make the fashion illegal we'll go back to being good little acceptable members of society.
