Vatican Urges Israel to Bar "Gay Parade" in Jerusalem

Calls It a "Grave Affront" to Religious Sentiments

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 9, 2006 (Zenit.org).- The Holy See appealed to Israeli authorities to cancel a "Gay Parade" scheduled for this Friday in Jerusalem, considering it an offense to Christians, Jews and Muslims.

A note published by the Vatican press office explains that "considering that on previous occasions religious values have been systematically offended, the Holy See cherishes the hope that the question will be reconsidered."

The communiqué expresses "profound disapproval of this initiative as it constitutes a grave affront to the sentiments of millions of Jewish, Muslim and Christian believers, who recognize the particular sacred character of the city of Jerusalem and request that their conviction be respected."

Jewish and Muslim leaders have expressed their opposition to the parade. Shlomo Amar, the Grand Sephardic Rabbi of Israel, sent a letter to Benedict XVI, requesting a gesture of support.

6. The Religion I was raised in doesn't despise me (Lutheran)
Neither does MCC, the Unitarians, or the United Church of Christ and there are many others.

Maybe I singled out Catholics because the article is about the vatican.

7. such broad-brush statements are just not okay. and there are
lutherans who despise us, as do some ucc folk.

it is not "the catholic faith" that makes it different from other sects, in that way. it is some members, some heirarchy, some idiots...

anyway, i just found it distasteful coming from a member of a group that becomes furious when people on DU make such generalizations about you all.

5. To appease the new Hitlers: Jerusalem parade cancelled. Pride Rally instead.
http://365gay.com/Newscon06/11/110906jerusalem.htm

Jerusalem's LGBT community, ultra-Orthodox leaders and police have agreed to cancel Friday's planned gay pride parade in the city, but a pride rally at a stadium will go ahead Israeli radio reported on Thursday.

Under the agreement Haredi protestors who have been staging nightly riots in Jerusalem will not hold a demonstration Friday to condemn gays.

The pact was worked out at a meeting with police amid growing concerns that a violent clash between the two sides could not be contained.

9. "a violent clash between the two sides" is a cheap way for them
to put it. the violence was promised by the ultra-Orthodox rioters, who'd been slamming around for a while now, showing they meant it about the violence.

sigh...
i'm sorry to hear it came to that. it seemed the pride marchers would even have risked the violence. since we know that risk, constantly, to be out at all.
