In America, deciding your political allegiance is easy. Are you for gay sex, or against it? If you are a Friend of Dorothy (or a friend of a friend), chances are you're a Democrat. If, on the other hand, you regard man-on-man action as a sin crying out to heaven for vengeance, you can only be a Republican.

One of Tripp's former colleagues has written an exhaustive, hair-splitting refutation in the Right-wing Weekly Standard, describing the book as "a hoax and a fraud" (while, in the final paragraph, conceding that Lincoln probably was an absolute screamer).

Note that Telegraph is the most right-wing of the British broadsheets, and yet is still more than happy to poke fun at American homophobes.
