I hope this will amuse some people here.
So last Sunday, we're putting our daughter on the train back to school. Two women were exchanging farewell kisses of a deeply romantic nature. I noticed them because they were smoking and cigarette smoke really bothers me. The kissing didn't bother me. What bothered me is that the kissing involved blowing smoke into each other's faces. That part was gross!

1. Not really amused here
Imagine your post revised to say that you saw two people of different races kissing. Could you imagine ever writing something like that?

3. The point is, two women were kissing without anyone taking notice.
It was the smoking that caught my eye.

8. OK, I guess it was the line about it was the smoking that was gross
implying that you did not find the women kissing to be gross. But that's good tho, where was the train station.

9. I Agree - It's A Sign of Progress
Twenty years ago, it would have been a bigger deal.

I'm reminded of an experience I had a month or so ago when I heard on the radio that our governor-to-be, Deval Patrick, would be the second black governor in US history. I smiled to think that Massachusetts was (once again) at the head of the pack in moving toward the Liberalization of the US.

Then it struck me - I'd never even thought of Patrick as "the black guy", nor had I heard anyone else mention it - we'd just never really thought about him being black. The fact that we've come to the point where his race was really a non-issue made me smile even a whole lot more.

2. Were they pausing the make-out session to take drags off their cigs?
maybe it was for ambience. the smoke machine was busted, so they made do with what was on-hand.

7. My humor is a little off kilter.
I was merely noting that a PDA between two women is now an accepted norm, at least in my neck of the woods. Smoking in public is fast becoming unacceptable. Given the fury that generally attends smoking thread here at DU, I thought it was a mildly amusing observation.

18. how much second hand smoke do most people come in
contact with?

I just don't understand the crusaders at all.

No, I'm not amused. It's not the same thing and a bad example and in bad taste.

with a straight guy :P

oh those were the days . . . . I made sure we kept a batch of cute ones around at all times, which wasn't hard to do. I'll have to say there for a while my ex ex ex and I were pretty stoned all the time until the novelty wore off.

Mostly found in men, but not uncommon in women as fetishes go...

17. You must be up north somewhere.
Here in Texas, the couple would probably get stared down so hard, they'd be too uncomfortable to repeat it.

19. I think I see where you were going with this, but it failed in the execution.
Let me re-write the scenario for you, while taking creative license to fictionalize the episode:

I was standing on a train platform in Syracuse, and there were two women smoking cigarettes and passionately kissing one another farewell.

As I watched them blow smoke in each other's faces between kisses, an older woman near me said, "Oh, that's disgusting! Someone should call security."

The woman's daughter said, "Yeah, you're not allowed to smoke on the platform!"

22. Not Amused
I am not really sure what you mean is amusing but the fact that they were kissing without anyone taking offense to it was cool.

23. You would have freaked if you had seen what
the first woman I ever fell in love with did with me. We used to blow each other "shotguns" where we'd blow smoke in each other's mouths on purpose.

She was way braver than I was though, because she'd actually turn the cigarette around with the lit part inside her mouth to do it. Ouch. I still can't do that.

Those were some of the worst times of my life, but she was a break in the bad parts then. She was the good part for the most part. I miss her.
