Some background: two local Democratic candidates for the Kalamazoo County Commission were defeated last month. Both candidates favored ammending the county's non-discrimination policy to include language protecting sexual orientation and gender identity. I can't WAIT to see the responses to this one!

Defeated commissioners don't understand issues
Friday, December 1, 2006
By Scott Zondervan

How sad it is that the two Kalamazoo County commissioners, Joe VanBruggen and Robert Brink, are so intolerant of the voters who did not agree with them.

VanBruggen and Brink are clearly misinformed and naive when it comes to understanding the issue of adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the county's equal-opportunity-employment policy. Do VanBruggen and Brink really believe that homosexual behavior and cross-dressing are the moral and legal equivalents of immutable characteristics such as race, color and sex? Apparently they don't understand the evidence that people are not born homosexual or transgender. Just as people are not born to smoke, drink alcohol or abuse drugs. These are voluntary behaviors that affect the people around them.

-snip-

Evidence also shows that homosexual behavior has been associated with dramatically higher incidences of domestic violence, mental illness, substance abuse, eating disorders, life-threatening diseases (AIDS, cancer and hepatitis), and premature death by up to 20 years. With all of this scientific evidence, one has to wonder what the county commissioners were thinking when they added sexual orientation to the equal-opportunity-employment policy. In fact, the commissioners never precisely defined which ``sexual orientation(s)'' they're talking about. Does the policy include other unhealthy lifestyles like pedophilia, sadism or bestiality?

-snip-

The people voted to maintain a better and healthier society, by showing their disapproval for ``tolerating'' the behaviors of the few in the community who would pose a threat to both themselves and the community they live in.

1. Every time I see a letter like this....
I think that perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if we set aside three states for these freaks - say Utah, Idaho and Wyoming - and let them start their own nutbag country. We'd retain trade agreements with them, but they couldn't cross the border without visas and fingerprinting.

6. I'd prefer to send them to Florida
They'd think we were doing them a big favor, they wouldn't put up much of a fuss, the state hangs down where we wouldn't have to drive around it to get from Montana to Washington, and best of all, it's sinking.

The problem will be the children who get born with brains. I'm afraid those children will have a pretty miserable life in Fundyland. At least now they can leave pretty easily on their 18th birthdays.

7. True...and Florida is sinking....
We'd have an amnesty program for children.

2. Maybe, just maybe, the incidents of emotional and mental problems
are caused by the very kind of homophobia displayed by this asshat of a letter writer? Does he not realize that, if any of it even has a grain of truth, it makes it that much less likely that it's a fucking CHOICE?

Maybe?

Fuckwad.

5. Did you honestly expect anything less from Zondervan?
(speaking as someone who grew up in West Michigan, but was able to get the hell out of that repressive environment.)
