Any thoughts out there on "The L Word"? Sorry if this is an old topic....
I watched the first two seasons and found it a very entertaining show although obviously there was a little snob appeal. After all how many real lesbians are that sophisticated and struggle with such problems in real life (hell you could say that about anyone). It was my impression that it was quite controversial in the gay community although appreciated on some levels. Thoughts?

Also one question for anyone who knows: what ever happened to that creep from the second season (Mark I think was his name) who put cameras in the house of his roomates and spied on them? Did they "resolve him" out of the picture or did he just magically disappear?

I hope this isn't too petty for this forum. Give me leeway and let me know if it is.

3. Errr...the OP is talking about "The L Word," a tv show on Showtime.
Think "Sex and the City," but even better and with lesbians.

2. Ok, first, Mark. ##SPOILERS##
Mark seemed to have been introduced to give more of a "male voice" to the show, but they gave it a creepy voice, and the "male voice" isn't really necessary. Was probably the execs, but they did away with him handily as the griping about his being there grew more feverent than the griping about a bunch of lesbians living in a man-free world. Mara was introduced later in response to the claim that there were no butches on the show, and that there was no representation of transexualism. Now, I myself would have preferred that they had both, and not rolled it all into one convienient conflicted character.

As for "that sophisticated and struggle with such problems in real life"...I find it difficult to find a show on television that actually does that. Heck, closest I can think of that's running presently is Battlestar Galactica.

I guess one of the problems with a "gay-themed" show or movie is that sexuality is but one aspect, albiet one with a heavy impact, one aspect of a persons character. Too often it is either played up, or played down so much you wouldn't know but for the "coming out" episode. It is getting better. You also have the problem that the whole community collectively groans when GBLT art puts forth a negative image. The recent episode of Law & Order where it turns out that not only is the executive a ball-busting CEO with ego issues, she's a LESBIAN!!!. Or gay men, clubs and drugs.

Oh, and the log cabin republicans complained because Republican Lesbians weren't well represented.

6. Yea' right. Already Lesbians might constitute 5% of all women then find the one's who are
conservative and that probably represents about 0.05% of the lesbians. So that gives you possible conservative lesbians at .05 x 5% as the total. I bet you could count the number of right wing lesbians on the fingers and toes of your own family combined for all of the U.S.

4. I tried when it first came on
And found it boring as hell.

At least Queer as Folk had kick ass music and was fun, despite being completely unrealistic. The L Word manages to be completely unrealistic and lame.

5. Unrealistic but entertaining.
I'm a straight male - watched some episodes with my lesbian friends who loved it. They taped all the episodes for me that included Dana Delaney 'cause they know I love the Dana gal. Overall, I liked it. Admittedly, for the sex appeal. We (my friends and I) shared lots of jokes at my expense as the show is full of beautiful women and I'm the only hetero viewer in the gang.

11. Tell me something.
You're from Texas. I'm sure you remember the soap, "Dallas." Tell me: How many "real Texans" are that sophisticated and struggle with such problems in real life? :eyes:

12. most of the lesbians i know are in graduate school.
so there are a lot of sophisticated lesbians.

as with any drama, there are exaggerations...but lack of sophistication is not a problem in the dyke community.
