Lesbian parents upset by decision to not broadcast show
http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=14941&sd=01/28/05

Two Vermont lesbian couples whose families are featured in a PBS children's program are upset the network has decided not to distribute the show. The PBS decision was announced after Margaret Spellings, the new secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, criticized the episode as inappropriate for children. Vermont Public Television will air "Sugartime," an episode of the show Postcards From Buster that features a broad variety of American families.

"Many parents would not want their young children exposed to the lifestyles portrayed in the episode," Spellings wrote Tuesday to Pat Mitchell, the president and chief executive officer of PBS.

1. God! When will our country evolve already?
"Many parents would not want their young children exposed to the lifestyles portrayed in the episode," Spellings wrote Tuesday to Pat Mitchell, the president and chief executive officer of PBS.

Exposed to what? That gay people exist. That the "lifestyles" are portrayed in an acceptable way not just portrayed? It's not the homosexuality that they reject it's the tolerance towards it. I guess that there are parents that would reject anything that depicts homosexuals without condemning it. I like to call those parents bigots.

It's like complaining that a scene depicting an African American family wasn't derogatory enough. Sounds crazy now, but not that long ago racism was a southern christian value (all that segregation now segregation forever pride in the 50s and 60s.) That's why I think it's just about enough time passing for the irrationality of hate to be clear to everyone and the haters will eventually hide like racists do today.

What do I know? These are just thoughts from a straight person -not that there's anything wrong with that right? ;-)

2. Spellings is going along with other Repubs to squelch
free speech and deny rights to others. If parents don't want their children to see it, turn off the TV. Frankly, I think it imperative to watch it to show that we are a diverse country.
