I have had HIV for 17 years, says MP Chris Smith

Chris Smith, the former Culture Secretary, has revealed that he has been HIV-positive for the past 17 years.

Mr Smith, who in 1984 became one of the first MPs to come out openly as a homosexual, is thought to be the first senior western politician to declare that he has the condition.

Last night he said that he had decided to go public about being HIV-positive because of the moving way in which Nelson Mandela had disclosed this month that his 54-year-old son, Makgatho, had died of Aids.
