Florida4Marriage.org, the main backers of the initiative, submitted 649,000 signatures, well above the required 611,000 before the Feb. 1 deadline. Proponents staged a last-ditch effort to gather signatures when it was revealed that their initial petitions, submitted in late December, fell short by 27,000 signatures due to reporting errors from county elections officials, primarily in Miami-Dade County.
For weeks, opponents to the measure, including GLBT organizations and a coalition that included straight allies, have conducted a public awareness effort to educate voters about the marriage measure. Activists passed out leaflets urging voters to oppose the amendment at polling stations during the Florida primary on Jan. 29.
“All along, we’ve been focused on November,” said Stephen Gaskill, communications director for Florida Red and Blue, one of the leading organizations opposing the amendment.
