Probable majority for gay marriage law in Norway

The government will probably put forward a bill to make marriage legal for same-sex couples, giving them the same legal standing as heterosexual married couples. This would mean that they would get the right to adopt, and also the right to artificial help with conception*. Several political parties in the center and to the right are letting their parliamentary representatives vote according to their conscience, which will most likely give the bill the votes it needs. Only the Christian People's party objects to the new law. The law will give churches the right, but not the obligation, to wed same-sex couples, and is a thorny issue in the Norwegian State church.

Norway has had civil unions since 1993.


*Norway allows open semen donations, but discriminate when it comes to egg donations, which is illegal.
