Whoopi Goldberg: Children should not be scared by gay penguins
During a spirited panel discussion, Whoopi Goldberg says that a Virginia school district could use some understanding before rushing to judge the "gay penguin book."

And Tango Makes Three, recently pulled from school library shelves in Loudoun County, Virginia, chronicles a male penguin couple who take care of each other while raising a baby.

While not advocating a cultural "pre-emptive strike" by introducing the subject matter before a child might be ready, co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck thinks it's a good resource for when a child asks about "two daddies."

"Penguins take care of each other," Goldberg contends. "If you scare a child about something, they will be scared. If you make it inappropriate, then it becomes inappropriate. If this is about two penguins that are given an egg because there's too many, and someone needs to help it hatch... that's what this is about!"

6. It's an excellent resource, but my own kids
were told about homosexuality prior to asking about it. I think that's why they are so tolerant and so intolerant of homophobes. They don't see a difference.

My teenaged son ripped a kid a new one the other day for saying that some people 'turn' gay. Obviously, he listened.

The fact that he comes from a very tolerant family, nuclear and extended probably helps as well.

2. It was the new co-host, the Xtian fundie, who was outrageous.
Hasselbeck actually seemed more or less okay with the book. Whoopi and Joy made a good point - this story is FACTUAL, not gay propaganda. Yet, the fundie intimated that because she was personally uncomfortable with homosexuality and gay relationships, she would not be okay with this book until her kids were older. That made absolutely no sense to me.

5. The book should be banned: it displays overt ovumism!
We shouldn't teach our children that the proper way to raise young is with eggs. This is all part of the Ovumistic Agenda to wean our young away from their proper viviparous behavior! Bringing in the gay-penguin part is just a distraction, to draw our attention away from the egg lovers' true intentions!

;-)

10. Eggs should be eaten (I like mine scrambled), not raised
Anyone who says otherwise is promoting the Ovumistic Agenda and is out to destroy America.

4. I love Whoopi!
Another celeb who talks a lot of common sense these days is the basketball player Charles Barkley who rants about those "fake Christians" who oppose gay marriage, and tells them our personal lives are none of their public business. The thing that's cool about people like Whoopi and Barkley is you get a good sense of their human decency when they discuss gay issues. If Whoopi and Barkley have not yet received awards yet from GLAAD, they should be promptly nominated.

7. Good for Whoppi
Stop scaring kids about sex. Pretending that same sex love does not happen is ridiculous. Pretending that everything is clearly black or white is close-minded. The abstinence only campaign is a failure. Claiming a person will still contact AIDES through the condom is pushing the boundaries of truth. Listening to Coast to Coast the other night, a man had authored a book about males becoming drones. I think his point was the breast development from all the chemicals in the environment. Young men are staying in their rooms, at mom's house, playing video games, and isolating socially. They are not going out to be MEN, fucking and fighting and making lots of money, to make the lovenest. Well, hell, if I'd grown up fearing all sexual contact brings about disease and a ruined life from unwanted pregnancy, I'd have stayed in the basement, too. In other words all this repression and possibly the nature of the generation, has created loners, who don't care about breeding. Perhaps its a natural consequence of overpopulation? Oh, hell, I'll finish my doctoral dissertation another time. Why is being gay such a problem to the right wing?

8. Oh, was this another "View" incident?
That show is responsible for so many moments on YouTube, iFilm, and The Soup they should get royalties. Please tell me Hasselbeck didn't embarrass herself again, did she?

I would so love a slugfest with her and Kathy Griffin.

9. Fundies vs. penguin butt-sex!
It's so amusing to see the right get it's collective panties in a bunch over a book where two penguins who hatch an egg happen to be male. The fundies are so obsessed with the idea of two males or two females having sex together that a simple hint of it makes their heads spin.

So in the interest of standing back and watching their pointed little heads explode, here's a list of other suspicious children's stories, movies and cartoons that they my want to look into for promoting that dreaded homo-seck-shul agenda:

Peter Pan - all that stuff about the "Lost Boys" is surely a code for something unsavory! (Kind of makes you understand why Michael Jackson called his ranch Neverland!)

Dumbo - Now there's a character who's different from the rest of the elephants and thanks to the right's exceptional minds we now know that different equals gay. And besides, Dumbo's relationship with that mouse is just plain unnatural!

Cinderella - Ever see the two mice in the Disney version? Gay, gay, gay!

The Ugly Duckling - Oh my Gawd! That duck is DIFFERENT from the others! And the story was written by Hans Christian Andersen, a known homo!

Warner Brothers cartoons - Just why was Bugs Bunny so willing to put on a dress to fool simple-minded "wabbit" hunter Elmer Fudd? No doubt Elmer's a symbolic swipe at the religious right who would like to do some of their own homo huntin'.
