Right wing magazine 'clears up confusion' on gays
Focus on the Family youth and gender specialist Mike Haley has a message for his readers in a recent edition of Breakaway Magazine.

Flanked by photos of metrosexual teen boys with facial expressions hinting at inner conflict, Haley offers a two-page debunking of "myths" that seemingly run the risk of convincing a gay youth questioning of his sexuality that homosexuality is an acceptable characteristic.

Among proclamations made in the article:
  • The "gay gene" is a tool to establish homosexuality as an "unchangeable" characteristic, further the marriage rights agenda, and indoctrinate pre-schoolers.
  • Alfred Kinsey's research was "pretty biased," and a "series of national studies," including a 1993 Wall Street Journal article, suggest that only 3% of people identify as gay or bisexual.

"What's the big deal about how many people are gay or straight?" the article asks. "By saying that one out of 10 people in the United States is homosexual, some gay activists are knowingly promoting a lie and declaring that homosexuality should be accepted as normal. Yet even this reasoning is lame. For instance, 10 percent to 15 percent of Americans suffer from alcoholism, but we don't accept this behavior as normal or healthy."

The entire article, Clearing Up the Confusion: Why Homosexuality Is NOT Part of God's Plan, is available below, as printed in the March 2008 edition of Breakaway Magazine.

2. Just who is Mike Haley REALLY and what is his expertise...
...that makes him someone I should pay the slightest attention to, other than to keep an eye on just another RW Fundamentalist Bigot?

5. But we must be fair....
Mike does concede that some gay couples really do love each other, which in the context of Focus on the Family is sticking your neck out. :sarcasm:

6. He is factually right about one thing
The 10% number is not accurate. Kinsey's data was flawed (MAJOR sample bias), and the true number is probably in the 3-5% range, depending on where you draw the line between GL/B and straight.

7. True.
The real danger in stuff like this is that it usually contains factual information, generally carefully cherry-picked, along with all the distortions and outright lies and this gives it a degree of credibility that it wouldn't have otherwise.

10. I don't believe the 3-5% number is accurate either
How can any researchers get a truly accurate number when they're asking people to self-identify as GLBT in a society that doesn't blink an eye at McClurkinism?

9. The frightening thing about this article
Is that Breakaway is Dobson's rag aimed at teen boys. (And boys only--girls get their own rag called Brio, because naturally boys and girls could never be interested in the same things. Why that would lead to gender confusion!)

How many gay and bisexual boys are going to read that and have it further them down the shame spiral? I hate what these assholes are doing to our kids. :argh:

11. That shame spiral
is one of the main reasons I finally got off my ass and did what I had always thought was right. I have seen it destroy my closest and now must make a stand on the issue. This enrages me. He was almost 50 and had lived with it all those years. How must this feel to those boys. This has to stop.

13. The combination of instilling shame in young people with the promise of a "cure" is toxic.
A licensed psychologist promised to cure me when I was 17. Jesus did, too. Fucking bastards.

And accepted as "just another viewpoint" even by people who call themselves "progressives".
