Gays fear an influx of hate-Sacramento
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-hate16mar16,0,1929221.story

One punch was all it took. One punch to forever divide. One punch to kill a young man.

On a hot summer afternoon along a placid lakefront in the Sacramento suburbs, Satender Singh had come with a group of fellow Fijians to celebrate his promotion at an AT&T call center. Three married couples and Singh, a lighthearted 26-year-old, drank and hooted and danced a crazy conga line to East Indian music

An innocent outing? Not in the eyes of the Russian family a few picnic tables away.

Andrey Vusik, 29, fresh from morning church services with his young children in tow, stared with disgust as Singh danced and hugged the other men while their wives giggled. To the Russian, Singh seemed rude and inappropriate, a gay man putting on an outrageous public display.

1. Slavic evangelical "christians". Hmph. We oughtta ask them
WWJK.

You know - WHO WOULD JESUS KILL??

Methinks if they hate our freedoms so much, perhaps they should not live here.

2. We need to be real careful about admitting immigrants into the US with homophobic views
We have enough citizens with such attitudes. We should not respect "different cultures" that hate and condone violence against gays.

5. Being from the area, and knowing the story...
Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 07:04 PM by Duke Newcombe
yes, this act sickened me incredibly...however, I'd respectfully request avoiding a rush to judgment on the Sacramento area. This fool was a loon--nothing more, nothing less.

7. I live in Sacramento, and the area is rife with fascist Slavic theocrats.
I'm not saying all the Slavic immigrants are fascist theocrats, but thousands of them are indeed. They are RADICAL and many among them prone to terrorism.

11. I try not to fall into the trap
But we are talking about a religious mindset here and you have to view them by what they teach and by the words and actions of the majority of the believers. People who who have serious disagreements with the teachings of a given religion tend not to participate in it. The church(es) in question are strongly homophobic and have not been shy about turning those views into political action and more than occasionally, violence.

15. No you mustn't
I understand the urge, but religions that teach and practice bigotry and hate deserve no more consideration than secular groups that do that kind of thing. People can't hide behind God when it comes to stuff like this.

17. as David said
"I'm not saying all the Slavic immigrants are fascist theocrats, but thousands of them are indeed. They are RADICAL and many among them prone to terrorism."

I think it helps to diversify, teach the east-bloc immigrants the flaws in their judgments as we learn our own flaws in ours; but some will not be taught, some will just lash out violently, and it scares the crap out of me sometimes.

*hugs for left coasters* watch your backs!
