Let's face it. They're all prevaricating cowards.
People like it when leaders are strong on their positions.

"I support equality for LGBT Americans and that's that. End of discussion. We cannot have two tiers of citizenship. As long as there is separation of church and state, there will never be a church in America that is forced to perform a wedding ceremony for those who don't live according to the particular church's doctrine. A gay couple has no more right to marriage in the Catholic Church than a Jewish couple or a Muslim couple or a Protestant couple. But if a church wants to marry a gay couple, who is the state to deny their liberties? The church is free to exclude whomever it wishes. The United States government is not. Now let's move on to economic issues..."

How hard is it? Really. Can we play the offensive every once in a blue moon for godsake?

4. Eh, the boi's okay. No cash for the mortgage let alone top surgery, but its all good.
Thanks for thinking about me! :) I don't come around here too often. When there's straight trolls arguing GDP in GLBT it's kinda over for me. I stop in every now and then to see what queer folks are up to, but I have no interest in or no solidarity with Democrats anymore. Too many classist assholes who don't mind teh gay, but can't stand the poor, too many poor assholes who hate teh gay, too many 'anti-war' people who are just anti THIS war, but totally okay with bombing Pakistan and god knows where else. I'm through with party politics.

I finally defend my dissertation in a few months, so I'm busy with that. But the boy is sweet as ever--five year anniversary is around the corner. Hope all's well with you, Ms. Lionness!

5. One more thing...
Man, I miss voting in NYC! I could vote for the best party of all: the THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH party. I remember a guy in a beat up Honda with a bullhorn on the roof driving around the east village blasting messages from the THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH party. I like a party that's always in all caps. Now that's a party.

2. Cowards.
I retain funny little bits and pieces from my couple of History of Modern Europe classes. One thing that's stuck in my mind is something Kaiser Wilhelm II said or supposedly said.

He was in conversation with this guy who was accusing Tsar Nicholas II of being two-faced and treacherous. Wilhelm replied, and I'm quoting from memory, "The Tsar is not treacherous, the Tsar is weak. Weakness is not treachery, but the results are the same."

Substitute Democrats, or at least the leadership, for Nicholas.

7. I might kick this thread for a few weeks.
I don't come to DU very often anymore but tonight I thought I'd read a few forums. Imagine how un-surprised I was to see yet another post calling for LGBT people to wait for Obama to address our issues once he is elected. :sigh:

And then I remembered this thread and I just had to kick it.

9. Just here to say
:hi:!

Good thread to kick. It blows my mind to think that the right thing to do, the constitutional thing to do is supposedly too much to expect our nominees to support.

10. Considering the news from California today -- I had to give this a kick.
I hope the Democratic party will now offer leadership -- real leadership -- on LGBT issues. The time is now. :kick:

11. Yes, but
I don't expect to see any "leadership" on the part of Democrats. They don't want to lead on this issue. They want to take a middle ground where they say gay people are valued, and shouldn't be discriminated against, but. Hillary and Obama both do it.

You're right. But Terry the pessimist doesn't see it happening right now.

14. Hey, Barack has said the word "gay" in his speeches. Plus an LGBT listing at the web site.
It's a start. I think Obama is going to help our community a lot.

Just wait til he gets into office.

15. Kucinich has been the only candidate so far to stand up for equal rights
even Dean in '04 only went as far as civil unions, a position he was praised for.

I have said before that I think Obama will eventually push for us if we keep pushing him. his status as an outsider, racially and politically, gives him a unique advantage for us- he can say things that no one else is allowed to say.

I think, given eight years, he will remake this entire nation, and, among all the other changes, will be equality for us.

gotta keep pushing at it though.

16. At that time
At that time, Dean's leadership on the issue was inspiring. We've just moved beyond that point in the last 4 years, and now we see the POSSIBILITY that our equality under the law can be made real. No more settling for 2nd best.
