Elderly Women will Turn Lesbian, according to Barbara Walters special |
|
Some (straight) people just don't get it. Tonight Baba Waba had a special on longevity and one of those interviewed was a man named Steven Dubner. He is co-author of a book called "Freakonomics" -- whatever the hell that is.
Dubner said that our culture will change and hopefully become less ageist as people continue to live longer and longer. He also said that since women generally outlive men, there will be a shortage of men in the golden years and therefore there will be a lot of "elderly lesbianism."
Huh?
Now mind you, he wasn't saying -- at least he didn't appear to be saying -- that some elderly women who have been closeted lesbians or bisexuals throughout their lives will come out of the closet in old age, which might make some sense. He suggested that old women will simply turn homo because there aren't enough older men around (what about younger men, for Pete's sake?).
Same-sex episodes (or rapes) among straight men I can understand in prisons. But somehow I can't see women who have been legitimately straight all their lives suddenly going gay as if it were something you could turn on and off like a switch. When I think of the long struggle it can be for many people to accept themselves, and how being gay is about so much more than sex, and how it's not a lifestyle but a life, and this dumb-nut simply reduces it to "not enough men around -- go lesbian."
No, this isn't an April Fool's joke (it's now after midnight on April 2nd in my neck of the woods).
Boy, have we got a long way to go!

2. I don't recall but I think he said it as a "possibility" |
|
That older women will resort to lesbianism and not an actual fact.

Well sex is so vital to HIM |
|
that it must be just as vital to others, so they will 'turn gay' in order to get some.
There is no logic to this, just mindless ranting.

3. Straight women can live together for companionship & to share expenses, but that doesn't make them |
|
...lesbians. Sounds like another guy-fantasy to me. He may be going for shock-value or simply titillation -- but the OP is right, I don't think you turn sexual attraction on and off like a switch.

4. Helen Gurley Brown advocated mistresses as the solution |
|
She said that men ought to take more than one woman, in the European manner, in order to rectify the shortage of men. A wife, a mistress. Double up, she said.

5. Most Men Are Impotent by Age 60 |
|
I am 58 yrs old and no, I am not going Lesbian but I will say that the majority of men (who are still alive) are impotent by age 60 or sooner. Not to mention they become seriously BORING. I have many female friends that I prefer to spend quality time with rather than my boring, impotent husband, but I have NO desire to have sex with these friends... Guess people have different perceptions of lesbianism.

but I hope you're saying that it's only straight men who become impotent and boring by age 60, LOL! (I'm a gay guy in my late forties but I intend to keep dating until death!)
But you're right that desiring to spend quality time with female friends does not a lesbian make.
Have you tried putting your hubby on viagra -- or forcing him to surf the net so he'll find something interesting to talk about?

As the GLBT token straight 55+ old white guy (with testosterone 20% ABOVE the average for a 30 year old) I in no way resemble your 60 year old male archetype.
Plus my SO thinks I'm funny and cultured!
POUT.

11. Like gay men, all straight men are not the same |
|
Just as there's stereotyping of gay men, there's also stereotyping of straight men (without the same level of prejudice/hatred, of course). This whole stupid "metrosexual" business implied that all straight men were slobs, and if they took pride in their appearance they were, therefore, "like gay men," all of whom were fashionable. Not only did the metrosexual concept deny the fact that many hetero men were snappy dressers and liked being fashionable, but that many, oh so many, gay men couldn't care less about fashion and were slobs (like me) and nothing like the "Queer Eye" guys.
Of course, one study suggested that on average gay men had larger and thicker you-know-what's, but I don't think they compared testosterone levels, LOL. (Mine must be pretty high because baldness and hairy bodies are caused by an excess of testosterone, which is why I always thought it was funny when someone would imply a guy was straight by saying "he has hair on his chest!" I think it's bizarre how even some straight guys shave their chest hair and prefer the totally smooth look.)
Gay or straight, we're all just different.
(Didn't you feel a bit sorry for the husband? I did. No offense to that poster.)

But she's trying. She WANTED to take ESTRATEST; I told her it was ok, my feelings were separate from my sex drive, but she wanted to.

13. Eh, I believe in the fluidity of sexuality. |

And that it's a very individual thing. So the generalization is kind of stupid, especially from someone who is supposed to know statistics, but otherwise, I am not offended by it.
