And read the posts.

Belittlement, snark, outright bigotry. I'm ashamed to be a member of DU when I read this shit.

And it would be ANY group they felt stood in the way of THEIR agenda, whatever that was. They wouldn't just throw you or me under the bus...they'd back it up to make sure they'd run over us.

1. We are not real people
We are abstractions. Only real people can have rights and protections. Abstractions can't. It is very annoying when abstractions start pretending that they are something other than what they are and try to divert folks from the important issues facing the country.

2. Whole thing put me right off my lunch.

Nauseating. When Rights are not equal for all, then we might as well just pack up and hand the keys to China.

3. Well fuck.
I just read through that thread and Tyler, you expressed it better than I ever could. Usually only tender, touching things make me cry but this thread did and there was nothing tender or touching about it. One of my dear friends is transitioning and I have never seen such courage. Going places with her has taught me that people, for the most part, are assholes who can't mind their own business and let someone else run their life. Transgendered people catch the worst that people have to dish out. To leave them out just to pass a bill with the "hope" that it can be added to later based on the "hope" that Dems will have both a President and a larger representation in Congress added to the "HOPE" that those Democrats will actually be for equality and have the guts to do the right thing is pretty lame. It is unconscionable to leave transgendered people out of this.

These days hope only means that someone is too wormy to say the right thing and wants the out to do the wrong thing. Hope is bullshit. We need real action and commitment. Where the hell is that?

5. I've just never understood why people think their job
in life is to police everybody else's behavior.

I can't say I begin to understand what transgendered people go through, but that's not really my job. My job is to treat them with the same dignity and respect I afford everybody else.

Nobody's elected me judge and I've avoided being on a jury by telling the truth about my crazy family.

11. You certainly don't need to apologize for anything.
Not only are you not part of the problem, but you're willing to stand up against the bigots. Even thought their bigotry doesn't hurt you, you're still trying to do the right thing. Sharing one trait with a bigot does not make you anything like them.

I'd go as far to say it's useless to post in there, period.

12. Words Fail Me
How can people support discrimination? how can they support excluding anyone from protection and full inclusion? Barney Frank and Ted Kennedy should be ashamed of themselves and so should anyone else who thinks this crap is good. To my trans brothers and sisters I am sorry that you are having to go through this, I am sorry for the pain this must be causing you. I can only say that you are not alone, that others stand with you in this fight and as a gay man I say we should wait on this bill until all of us, G and L and B and T are included.

14. What a bunch of creeps they were
All this upset over someone saying fuck Ted Kennedy, as if Ted can not deal with it, and as if all manner of Democrats are not ripped to shreds and given a fine howdy do here on a daily basis.
In a larger sense, I was just amazed all over again that Democrats don't seem to have the instinct to reach out to a righteously pissed off fellow Democrat, and will stand frothing over a slight to a candidate or another millionaire Senator, but seem to think that a Democrat who has just been told she will not have basic protections extended to her should just shut up and take it.
Oh and side note, those of you using the 'incrimintal steps' argument need to drop your critiques of DADT and DOMA as they were both in fact compromise incrimental steps very much in the nature of this sell out, but lacking in the targeting of a specific group.
People fighting to end legal discrimination against themselves really don't need to be concerned with Teddy Kennedy's feelings. The end.

16. I see most of them are either Democratic party loyalists, or clueless Obama supporters...
The party loyalists are the ones who deserve the most contempt, they traded their brains in for party rhetoric, and they are loyal to the end. If the Democratic party decided to reinstate slavery in the party platform, they wouldn't say shit to oppose it, assholes, every one of them.

17. Eh, not a good example
Edited on Thu Apr-03-08 11:12 AM by Prism
I've certainly seen plenty of posts on DU to get my blood boiling, but that thread isn't a good example. The OP went in looking for a fight, her fists flying, and (mysteriously) the entire thing devolved into a flamefest at warp speed.

The OP was wrong to approach the topic in that way. Tossing out "Fuck Ted Kennedy" in GD,P is like throwing a bomb into an ammunition pile. What, exactly, does anyone expect from a thread that starts out that way?

There is certainly a conversation to be had about the merits of ENDA in regards to whether an all-or-nothing vs. an incrementalist approach is the way to go.

But not a whole lot of people in that thread, gay or straight, were looking to have that conversation. It was a pissing match with fire hoses.
