Maine Measure Would Wipe Out LGBT Protections
(Augusta, Maine) A conservative Christian group is mounting a referendum effort that could wipe out all protections for LGBT citizens in Maine.

The proposal would ban same-sex marriage and civil unions, wipe out existing laws giving limited rights to gay and lesbian couples, removed LGBT protections under the state's Human Rights Act, and would remove funding from the Attorney General's Office to investigate discrimination claims.

If it were approved by voters it would make the only New England state to afford no civil rights to its LGBT citizens. Same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts while civil unions are available in Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut. Some protections are afforded same-sex couples in Rhode Island.

The Christian Civic League of Maine says if it doesn't act now the courts or the legislature could allow same-sex couples to marry.

2. And this would be a problem because???
Why the hell shouldn't LGBT folks have the same rights as everyone else? Where in hell do these folks get off?

Isn't it time to have a mass movement supporting tolerance?

3. They don't have to be
tolerant, they don't even have to like it. They just need to shut the fuck up and let everyone have their civil rights and get over themselves.

4. I don't think there's a freakin' chance in hell these
assholes will succeed. I doubt they'll get the signatures they need for the ballot but if they somehow manage to get that far, I, for one will be doing whatever it takes to make sure the good people of my state (the vast majority) stop these muthafuckers in their tracks.

6. Maine is a blue state...
albeit with two repub senators... I don't think the bigots will win this one. Still, it is very troubling that people want to take away all the civil rights of gay people. Its disgusting and Mainers (is that the right word?) will vote to keep anti-discrimination laws.
