And in advance, please take no offense - it is not intended as such.
This came up at work (I do research for a media company).
Is an adult film performer who refers to themself as a "shemale" considered a man or a woman when designating gender?
Thanks and again - I mean no offense to anyone - so please forgive my ignorance.

1. The best bet is to ask him or her. I don't think there is a one size fits all answer. |

This person is referred to as a female by wikipedia and on her (I guess) website, so that is what I will use.

3. 'Shemale' is generally a derogatory term for male-to-female transsexuals. So use 'she', not 'he'. |
|
And since it's a derogatory term, it's infinitely preferable not to use the word 'shemale' in everyday conversation.

I used the term only because she was referring to herself as such. Thank you for enlightening me :hi:
