We ended up with 180 students signing up for our Day of Silence |
|
I am still a bit in shock. I would have been happy with 50, estatic with 75, amazed with 100 but 180 is just more than I would have ever imagined. I wish I could participate with the students but such is life. I am so proud of these kids. I know that I never could have done this when I was their age, no way, no how. I had a kid come to me today telling me how glad she was to know a gay teacher after telling me she had come out to her mother. I will admit, that is why I am doing this. It is here, the rubber hits the road.

Just out of curiosity, about how many students are at your school total?

about 1800. I admit to almost crying today. Assuming these kids wind up taking this seriously, this is going to be amazing.

proud to "cyber know" you!
That is outstanding. You have done amazing work and think how big this really is. 180 students who are aware and supportive or able to be out and proud. That will affect so many more people. Yay you!

The kids have done most of the work. They distribute ribbons tomorrow during lunch and then we have the day. I just hope I hold it together emotionally so to speak. Don't want to live down to stereotypes by crying in class.

13. Crying in class would be a stereotype? |
|
I think it would be perfectly acceptable in this circumstance. Seriously, I don't know how you could help yourself. Not a stereotype I have ever heard of.
I am so happy for you!

We have had some parental complaints which have led to certain curtailments upon us.

We had one of our largest GSA meetings today, and posters for the day of silence are up in the school. I don't know yet how many are participating. Your numbers are overwhelming, it's great.

11. what amazes me is this was in the face of my losing our publicity routes |
|
We have posters and word of mouth, nothing else. Good luck on yours.
