1. I would say I'm so not stereotypically gay I had a hard time getting a date in my younger years.
For the 6 years I was a dancer I had at men pronouncing their everlasting love to me nightly and I couldn't get a date at the local lesbian bar to save my life. Everyone thought I was straight through my goodlookin' years, sigh... All my friends were straight men and I didn't like (and don't like) folk music. I wear make up and for a decade I had hair to the middle of my back.

Don't play softball
Don't like folk music
Don't play a guitar
Not a vegan
Not pagan
Don't have leg hair ('cept when I'm lazy)
Paint my nails
Have mostly straight male friends

Also don't live the gay lifestyle

18. Pretty low on the stereotype scale
Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 07:29 PM by Karl_Bonner_1982
My room is messy
Don't have the flashiest clothes
Not interested in drag
Most pop music annoys me
A lot of hip-hop and rap digs me
Not a lot of seasonal decorating
None of the "you go girlfriend" attitude
Socially timid and awkward
And most of my male friends are straight.

Not very high on the "he must be gay" scale

A few possible hits:

Not big into most sports
Enjoy DARK SHADOWS which is a soap
Can act a little bit flamey when I'm drunk, but not much.

36. Nope, your hits don't hit.
None of my straight male friends are into sports. Who doesn't enjoy Dark Shadows? (I grew up playing the board game.) And a few of them act flamey when they're drunk but only if they're hanging with their gay friends and joking around. Still. You're strikin' out bro.

3. More geeky than gay, I guess.
The geeky-ness throws people off, I think.
I love my video games and movies. :)

I haven't been to a gay bar in god-knows-how-long. It's been years, and I'm not even 30 yet. I can't stand the bar scene.
I don't shop for name brands; my taste in fashion ranges from "questionable" to "plain." (Same goes for my home decor taste.)
I can't tell you a song in the Top 40 pop charts; NPR for me.
I can't dance to save my life.
Most of my classmates and co-workers didn't know until I told them.
I have zero close gay friends, other than my partner.

On the other hand, I do fit some more stereotypical things..
I did love watching SOAP, The Golden Girls, etc when I was growing-up. (then again, I watched a ton of TV in general back then..)
I like some plays and musicals.
My partner and I spoil the dog thoroughly. Does that count?
I'm a neat freak.
And a huge mama's boy.
Gardening, I guess?

Most people don't realize I'm not straight until I make some comment about a hot actor or something. :P

I wasn't daddy's boy, either.

Love plays and musicals.

My dogs are spoiled rotten.

5. I started out at my first gay bar
In the late 70's. My idea of a cool and hip thing to wear was a tee-shirt that said 'Disco Sucks'. Of course disco was sacred at the time. So that about says it. I've been just as on top of gay sensibilities ever since!
I grew up in an area where I met all kinds of gay people as I grew up. There was no sterotype. From macho men to the Queens of the Self Designed Furniture....lesbians, old and young. Gay folk of color, from other countries. Famous, famous people, rich people, poor people. So I was never presented with a sterotype and told it was a template. This has been, as Mr Monk would say, a blessing and a curse.

hate lesbian folk music
dont play sports

however as a stereotypical gay man i do better.. probably why most of friends are gay men

8. I chose 'moderate' based on the iPod test
Yes, I have CDs of Streisand, Liza Minelli and Bette Midler on my iPod ... but I've also got "butch" music like Springsteen, U2, The Doors, etc.

I guess I have the same approach to life. I can cook a killer quiche AND change the oil in my pickup, so I guess my stereotypes got ran through a food processor.

10. Depends on which stereotype you use
I'm chubby and most of my hair is on my face and body rather than the top of my head. I generally wear a lot of denim and flannel. My idea of an evening out with friends usually involves dinner at a local burger joint followed by beer and a few rounds of pool. I work as a computer programmer and have a lot of friends known only through World of Warcraft.

As a bear, I'm as stereotypical as you can get. When you use the common stereotype of gay men, though... not so much. :hi:

11. Yes and no
I definitely fit some lesbian stereotypes. I love folk music and "women's" music, I'm mostly vegetarian/organic buying, and I don't wear makeup. My wardrobe includes mostly political and funny t-shirts, tie dyes, and comfortable pants. On the other hand, I'm not at all butch, have a cat but also lots of dogs and am much more of a "dog person," and think mullets and flannel are hideous. My fiancee is similar. No make-up, casual clothes, practical shoes, loves folk music even more than I do, but has long hair which she loves. Oh, and we both love musicals! Although gay people usually recognize us as a couple, straight people always think we are sisters. It drives us crazy!

My feeling is...be who you are. Don't be stereotypical because you think it's what you should look or behave like to be recognized or accepted. I have met LGBT people whom I felt were intentionally putting on an act or taking on a role, and I didn't want to be around them because they were not genuine. On the other hand, I've met some people whose natural self/way of being included a number of "stereotypes" - and there's nothing wrong with that!

12. Kinda yes, kinda no.
I'm really political, quite left wing, and I have a thing for gender theory. I listen to folk music, and a lot of other "lesbian" music (think the Cliks, Sleater-Kinney, Le Tigre, stuff like that). I don't eat any meat, except for fish and seafood. I loooove rainbows. I absolutely love musical theatre (more of a gay guy thing, but whatever), I play guitar, can't dance (but I really want to learn), and I rarely wear makeup other than lipstick.

But, I wear dresses, skirts, and lipstick, I really want to learn to dance, I love stereotypical girly things like cooking and sewing (although I don't do much sewing). I play piano and used to play violin. I am terrible at sports and hate them with a burning passion.

Oh yeah, and I'm currently dating a guy. (I'm a Kinsey 5, not a 6, even when I try.)

17. SCBeeland, I'm frankly gobsmacked at your comment
about the absence of stereotypes. Granted there are a few stereotypes, not just one, but come on. There are straight male and straight female stereotypes and lots of people conform to them. My 39th birthday bash flopped last week because most of my male friends ditched me for some apparently super-important rugby match (I'm from South Africa where that's a big deal). So why not gays? For the record, I'm straight, but grew up with so many gay friends I feel like a male fag hag (I hope that term isn't offensive in your neck on the woods 'cos it isn't here). And I think I've met four gay people who weren't obviously gay in my life.

To be completely honest gay guys are a lot easier to recognise than lesbians (for this straight male at least) and non-stereotype elements may come into it. I read about a study recently where both gay and straight men could recognise who was gay and who was straight from voice alone at accuracy rates way above statistical chance, which interests me because I've recognised a difficult to pin down "gay" way of speaking in at least half the gay men I've ever known.

20. The Gay Accent
Yeah, David Cross does a whole bit on it. It's so true: not every gay man has that voice, but ONLY gay men have that voice. You've never heard a straight man say : "I'm gonna go out and get so much pussy tonight. Oh!"

Happy birthday!

27. I've never met any stereotypical people personally
My first boyfriend was, in almost every way, like Larry the Cable Guy (but he looked a lot better). No one north of Virginia could understand what he was saying, he loved to hunt and fish, loved NASCAR, wore camo, loved country music, etc, but that's not really what people think of when they think of a gay guy. The boyfriends I've had and the other gay friends I've had - imagine if Alan Jackson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were gay men - that's how they were. Of course, being in middle Georgia, you're almost forced to "fit in" or atleast attempt to if you want to avoid being spit on and ran over in the street. Atleast what I meant is I've never met a gay man who has all the stereotypes you see on TV, especially the voice. (Although on the other hand, everyone where I live sounds like John Wayne since everyone smokes two packs a day)

19. I Have No Idea What Your Yardstick Is
I love football for other reasons than watching hot guys in tight fitting clothes. I don't shave anything but my face, and I won't go anywhere for a night out on the town where I can't wear a t-shirt and jeans. I can't dance, and I don't have a lot of female friends. I'd rather play softball than go clothes shopping, and I own one pair of dress shoes, one pair of casual shoes, and one pair of sneakers. I have the same tiny bottle of Calvin Klein's Obsession that I had back in college 15 years ago, and it's the only cologne I own.

On the other hand, I love Broadway musicals, and wish that I could walk down the street singing without turning a single head. I can't stand boxing or NASCAR, and I'd rather be baking than golfing. I'm seriously interested in learning how to knit a nice thick blanket like my grandmother used to make, and I can happily spend at least two hours in either the kitchen or electronics section of any department store.

You tell me: how stereotypical am I?

21. Don't know if I really am stereotypical at all.
my tastes in music includes punk, metal, some folk, some blues, rock of course although the harder the better as far as I am concerned.

My tastes in clothes. I pretty much wear the jeans and work boots that I work in all day. plain dark colored t shirts and a biker head wrap under my bicycle helmet.

My appearance includes a full beard, some acne on occasion which I never managed to get rid of. balding some. not the best teeth. chubby rather than muscular although I want to work out more simply so I can get able to do more work most of my work right now is cleaning and some computers.

Unless I happen to be more a stereotypical bear I don't think I have much of a stereotypical personality.

You will NEVER see me in a dress or any girly clothing (I wear a bra because the effects of gravity and friction are *uncomfortable*). I like to build things, I'm loud and I prefer beer, love football and hockey, etc. But I'm not exactly sure I fit all stereotypes. I wear make-up on occasion, and look mighty fine when I do. I love fashion and ridiculous shoes (just not to wear, clothes don't fit and my feet and bad ankle hate heels, but a girl can look).

I fit several particular gay stereotypes, but not the most popular.

For example, I wouldn't be found dead in a skin-tight white t-shirt, but have to admit to being somewhat vain about my appearance.

40. Name a bi chick stereotype and I fit it.
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 03:14 AM by Chovexani
I'm a goth chick who really digs androgyny. I'm way into kink and have an above average sex drive. I'm polyamorous, and in an exclusive triad. I'm horribly indecisive, from food choices up to what shoes to where to what to do on vacation. Before I was actively poly, I was a serial monogamist who cheated on more than one person (I am still very ashamed of this, but I was extremely young, stupid, and was sexually abused by a couple of much older men so I went through an acting out phase.). I have bouts of extreme flightiness (though I blame this more on being a Gemini than my bisexuality :P).

The only stereotype I don't fit is the "leaving a lesbian for a man" thing. Never done that. Ironically the only lesbian I've ever dated (I tend to only date other bis, not out of bigotry but out of simple opportunity; in particular I seem to be candy for bi males, and for a lot of my boyfriends I've been the first person they've come out to) was a complete lying sack of shit who cheated on me, and I was totally faithful to her. I like to say I dumped her for myself; I took a lot of much-needed "me" time after that breakup.
