I attended the first legal gay marriage in San Francisco today (photos).
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 02:45 AM by 94114_San_Francisco

This is what the crowd looked like on the west side of city hall. Naturally, a small group of Christian extremists had to ruin it for everyone.

Please note the "We don't hate homos" message. Don't you feel better? I know I feel better.

I took this photo as my husband and I entered city hall.

Del Martin and Phyllis Lion were married in the Mayor's office. These guests are some local LGBT leaders.

Phyllis, Del and Mayor Newsom are just behind the guy who ruined my shot.

The happy couple (AP photo).

The press conference.

Cake for everyone!

The real magic was inside city hall. These same sanctimonious jerks were still there as we left. Of their many enlightened banners, this was my personal favorite.

And here's another humble servant of Christ. :eyes: This is the guy holding the sign in the photo above. His T-shirt says "No Homo" -- need I say more?

Another clinched-sphinctered "we don't hate homos" stud for Christ. What a catch, eh?

Last but not least: "The Jesus-mobile". It's kind of like "Chitty-chitty-bang-bang" but not.

Even with the obligatory religious foolishness, it was a fun and beautiful afternoon. The ceremony was wonderful! We have a friend who used to be on the Mayor's staff and he showed us a great time. My husband and I feel like we really were a part of history today. It was a monumental moment. As we left city hall through the west side doors, we stopped and gave each other a long and passionate kiss. The crowd went wild for us; I'll never forget the cheering!

Hold your heads high my friends, the world changed in profound ways today. :grouphug:

2. Great photos!
As the world moves forward, the Christers cling desperately to their backward past.

Congratulations!

3. I like what's behind the Jesus Mobile:

Banners for "Opera in the Park" and "San Francisco Opera".

Maybe beautiful singing is part of the gay agenda? Who knew?

Cool!!!

5. They said they'd been bringing the wedding cake every year since 2000.

Glad they finally got to eat it the way it was meant to be eaten.

I had some friends who would have loved to see this day.

6. Why so many photos of the bigots?
Supporters outnumbered them 100 to 1. Sure their signs were bigger, but so what? Honestly, I am really upset that you chose to focus on the bigotry of 5-10 people and ignore the several hundred of very enthusiastic supporters. It was not all about what went on inside the halls of power.

17. That's an easy question to answer.
I took photos of what was in front of me.

As an amateur, I simply documented my experience. Also, I have other photos (that you'd approve of) but I'm in them. I don't post photos of myself on the internet.

Please feel free to add any photos you'd like to this thread. I think we would all enjoy seeing them.

8. Thank you for posting those pics
Forget the bigots. Fuck em'.

The world DID profoundly change yesterday. Yesterday was historic.

And I have all my hopes, all of my best wishes that those marriages will STAY legal, that the anti-gay amendment on the ballot in November WIll be defeated (and I'm contributing to Equality California to help. I wish I could be there in person to help) and that marriage equality in your state will STAY legal so that ALL of the good people of California will benefit.

Very nice pictures and I thank you for posting them.

9. Thank you.
Happy tears :).

I would have given just about anything to have been there to celebrate with them. Probably good that I am stuck here. I am no fan of marriage (getting hitched was not the best idea I ever had but at least I had the choice) but I would have blubbered tears of joy for them. I hope and pray I spend a lot of time in the future blubbering for joy. This is truly beautiful.

13. Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon
The "happy couple" in your photo above:

Martin and Lyon have lived in the same house in San Francisco since 1955. That same year, at a time of flourishing McCarthyism, which hunted not only communists but also gays, the pair helped found -- with six other women -- the Daughters of Bilitis, the nation's first lesbian rights organization. They risked everything. Martin was elected president and Lyon secretary. "DOB went on to define its purpose as bringing lesbians into the public discourse through education, encouraging responsible research studies, and advocating for changes in the penal code."

I ordered Lei's from Hawaii, one for each of us and one for my step-mom and our friend Ro who are coming up for the wedding.

God help any of those protesters that try and get in my step-mom's face.

She a big boned gal from southern Alberta !!!!

15. Yay California!!
I'm so happy for all the happy couples. My mom is gay and even though I'm not (which would come as a shocker to many Christians) I think this is such a huge step forward. Maybe she'll never want to get married (again), but I hope someday NJ will pass a similar law. I live in OK--it will never, ever happen here.
Woo hoo!:grouphug:

22. Thanks for sharing, buddy.
I'm so happy to see that you were able to make it and document the event. It kind of brings me back...

Over here on the East Coast, all the news channels carried the good news. But anytime they interviewed a recently married couple, right behind them would be one of these Jeebus freaks waving a flag, denouncing them as sinners.

26. Wow.Wow. These pix are fabulous to see. Even the placard carrying jerks. But...
it's gonna be a while before we see the U. S. of A. become bigotry-free.

Just hope this doesn't take a turn for the worse in November.
