P-Town advice for a newbie
I have a little bit of extra money, it's been a rough year, and I haven't done any traveling in ages.

a weekend in Providence, RI likely in August sounds appealing to me; if nothing else, then just for the experience.

does anyone have any tips?

1. Dont know anything bout Providence, but....
Isn't "P-Town" the nickname for Provincetown, Mass? I'm going to Boston later this month and will be staying 2 nights on Cape Cod. I've never been to Provincetown before, but I'm looking forward to it!

5. Actually, Providence RI also has a very vibrant LGBT community in its own right...
At least, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Providence">wikipedia.

6. You'll go back a second time, for sure!
It's a great time out there. The people are really friendly, the nighlife is amazing--always something to do!! I'd say avoid going in August when they have their Pride Fest, because you'll have trouble getting a room, and the inn's usually impose a minimum stay.

7. Providence is in Rhode Island
and P-Town (Provincetown) is on Cape Cod in Mass.

I just got back from PTown and I had a great time - not a cheap get-away though. Providence is also a wonderful city for GLBT folks

I took the high speed ferry over from Boston (no pun intended) and spent 4 nights in a nice B&B in the East End. this week is Bear Week so if you like your guys big and hairy you better get a move on! The clubs were packed and the shops were full.

My only issue (not a complaint, just an issue) is the number of straight families there with kids. I have NOTHING against them being there but on more than one occasion i saw a "straight" making a face or saying something disparaging about one of the drag queens advertising their shows or walking down Commercial Street. You would think they would know before visiting that PTown is a gay resort (predominantly).

Oh, yeah - a lot of Europeans (Germans) there enjoying the strong Euro too

8. I noticed a lot of families there when I've visited. Most are fine, but you're right about some.
Appalling that they would come to a place that is KNOWN for being full of gay people, then make disparaging remarks and facial expressions when encountered with a drag queen, or two women or two men holding hands. One place where we can feel "allowed" to hold hands or be like any straight couple in the world, and we can't even get away from the hate there. There are also plenty of people who seem to just go there to gawk. But, whatever. It's still a pretty great place, and it's nice to feel like part of the majority somewhere.

9. you're right PF
it was nice to be able to give a friend a kiss and walk down the street with my arm around another man without worrying about it.

I did have one woman ask me if I was gay, when I said yes she asked if I might be interested in her son!

i love PTown for all it's diversity and the acceptance. I just wonder why those who cannot accept us even go there (I mean c'mon, it is not like you are ever "passing through" PTown)!!

Peace

13. LOL. It was great today!
Sunny but cooler (72 degrees). I liked the energy, the "verve" on the streets. And it was nice to walk around and see countless rainbow flags and equals signs hanging from lots of windows! My partner is usually reserved and kinda shy, but HE was the one who went into the Human Rights Campaign store and came out with a cap, a bag, and some stickers! And I did see several male couples holding hands and some lesbians snuggling on a bench. It was nice to be in the majority for once!

15. I agree
I had not been back in a while but had the best time with my "kind". I am thinking of renting a house for the season next year - i am a quick ferry ride from Boston away. Makes for wonderful relaxing weekends!!

Peace:pals:

12. There's a fun tea dance on Sunday at the Docks.
and also, the dock there is a very busy spot just for hanging out, too, at all times. Also, there's a wonderful little restaurant on the main strip located in a Queen Anne-type structure - with tables on the porch. I forget the name, but it was DELISH!
