On August 27th, 2008, our community lost a founding mother, a heroic leader
and a dear friend. Del Martin, who was 87, passed away in San Francisco
after more than half a century of fighting "the church, the courts and the
couch" - providing focused leadership for social change.
Martin and her beloved Phyllis Lyon were the nation's first and most visible
lesbian rights activists whose work combating homophobia, sexism, racism and
violence shaped the LGBT and feminist movements as we know them today. Del's
relentless conviction, keen political analysis and ability to work in
coalition made her a formidable and powerful leader, strategist, author and
speaker throughout a lifetime committed to justice.
