Steven Spielberg gives $100K to the "No on Prop 8" campaign.
Great news! Right after Brad Pitt. :-)

Spielberg Adds $100K To The 'No' On 8 Campaign

Steven Spielberg and his spouse, Kate Capshaw, followed in the footsteps of Brad Pitt and chipped in a $100,000 donation to fight Proposition 8, the constitutional marriage amendment that would take away the rights of gays and lesbians to marry in California.

"By writing discrimination into our state constitution, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate the right of each and every citizen in our state to marry regardless of sexual orientation," the couple said in a written statement released Monday. "Such discrimination has NO place in California's constitution, or any other."

Despite a recent spate of celebrity gifts to defeat the ban, backers of the measure are still winning the money game, outraising the 'No' on 8 campaign $17.8 million to $12.4 million, according to Tuesday's LA Times.

Financial backing is critical to the ability of both sides to air ads promoting their position, with weekly spots costing anywhere from $3.5 million to $5 million in order to ensure state voters view them 7 to 10 times.

Alongside the cash injection from the entertainment industry, the LA Times reports that San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom will attend a $5,000-per-person New York fundraiser Thursday with Gov. David Paterson, a long-time supporter of marriage equality. (The Advocate)

1. Okay. We'll take Spielberg and Brad Pitt and everything else in the Blue states
and the Repugs can have what's left. Then see how they like their good old US of A.

(I have nothing against Blue people in Red states, though my heart goes out to them.)

2. Does Proposition 8 actually have a chance of passing?
Anybody know if there have been recent polls on it?

3. I've read some stuff...
on other blogs saying that the NO side is winning so far, and also don't get too confident. (Sorry, I haven't seen any numbers.) The Proposition 8 supporters are well-organized, well-financed, and highly motivated. So all you Prop 8 opponents better do a serious GOTV (Get Out the Vote) campaign. Make sure you're registered, check out i.d. requirements, and get your buddies to do the same. Good luck!

<<Opposition to a California ballot measure to ban same-sex marriage is mounting following Attorney General Jerry Brown's move to change the language on the initiative, according to a Field Poll to be released today.

The poll found that just 38 percent of likely voters support the measure, while 55 percent intend to vote no. That compares with 42 percent in support and 51 percent opposed in July. >>

5. The "yes" people are raking in a lot of money.
But this looks damn good. I'll give Equality California some more money if I can. :-)

6. People forget that parts of CA are very fundie friendly
Fresno, Bakersfield, parts of the O.C., and San Diego are all pretty staunchly conservative. That said, I don't think money wins this one.
