Steve Young, Mormon, hall of fame QB, says "No on Prop 8"
Wow...Steve Young, former star quarterback for the San Fran 49'ers, is one of the bay area's most prominent Mormons. He and his wife have not one but several "No on Prop 8" signs in their front yard. And Young's wife, Barbara, donated $50,000 to fight Prop 8.

Steve Young's Home Displays 'No On 8' Signs

PALO ALTO (CBS 5) ― Prominent voices have been coming out in opposition to Proposition 8, California's proposed ban on same-sex marriage — but one of them is a name that might come as a surprise.

The 'Yes On 8' campaign has been funded in large part by members of the Mormon church, but one of the Bay Area's most prominent Mormons and his wife have several "No On 8" signs on their property.

6. Interesting. Mormons can be moved on this issue
About 10 years in Idaho there was some anti-gay initiative or another pushed by the filmmakers who did "The Gay Agenda." This particular group of bigots, like many fundies, hated Mormons and Catholics as well. At the tail end of their film they advertised other films of theirs for sale, including a couple of really nasty anti-Mormon ones. Some smart gay activists got that frame enlarged, and made sure that every Mormon elder in Idaho had a copy. Initiative tanked.

11. Okay, I'm a wet blanket. This is really Barbara Young's endorsement, not her husband's.
"To expand on my earlier email, I am very passionate about this issue and Steve is completely supportive of me and my work for equality. We both love our Church and are grateful that our Church encourages us to vote our conscience. Steve prefers not to get involved politically on any issue no matter what the cause and therefore makes no endorsement," she wrote. --Barbara Young

I am more than grateful to Barbara Young. She's on the right side of history and light years ahead of the Mormon church. Her financial generosity is inspiring!

However, technically speaking, Steve Young has made no endorsement -- and I'm sure he has very complicated reasons for that position.

12. I'd like to add to this...

Not only do they have a sign in front of their house, which is cool, but according to the Prop 8 database on SFgate.com, Barbara Young has donated $47,000 to the No on 8 campaign this year.

A sign is one thing, but $47K in donations is a strong conviction. Way to go, Young family!

FWIW, I know another LDS family with a No on 8 sign in front of their house. And they live in a VERY red area.

edited to add: I just read you have this in your first post...sorry. Still, very cool.

14. It's Great to See...
that not all people of faith, and in this case, Mormons, are buying into the homophobic crap. My hat is off to both Steve and his wife. I am really happy to see support for the defeat of Prop 8 coming from some unexpected quarters. It makes the fact that many of our own have not seen fit to donate one cent or one moment of time a bit easier to beat. You GO, Steve!!!
