2. That is by far the most depressing news of the night
But not entirely surprising, if what we've seen on DU during the campaign season is any indication. :(

4. I know it sucks but stand strong
and do not fear. It'll take a little more time, but Obama will appoint folks to the supreme court who actually believe in equality for all Americans. It's only a matter of time before we get a case in front of them and have them say once and for all that states may not amend their constitutions to specifically deny rights to minorities.

If not, we can always decide that we want to get a proposition on the ballot that says Mormonism is a cult and cannot be practiced in California. Gay's aren't the only vulnerable minority, and there are many ways to make a point.

Hurray for Obama, too bad about the queers (and all their efforts for this campaign).

Enjoy the victory party, Democrats. :eyes:

27. Amen. We got thrown under the Hopemobile in October 2007
as a deliberate way of dogwhistling to the Bible-beaters that this was one Democrat who was not going to take orders from the queers.

Perfectly obvious what was going on.

32. baloney
Obama "telegraphed" nothing of the kind. He came right out and made a statement that the court's decision striking down the barrier to same-sex marriage should not be overturned. He was against Proposition 8.

And thanks for reminding me of the primary wars and the non-stop hostility and misrepresentation regarding Obama's position from many Hillary supporters! Remembering all that shit makes it a lot easier to see how No On 8 managed to blow a substantial lead by systematically alienating every swing voter in California.

18. Meet the Great Rupture
between white liberals and African-Americans. This venerable political alliance of 60 years' standing is about to fall to pieces because now that the highest office has been reached, the two parties have little use for one another. The AA part of the alliance is FAR more socially conservative than the white liberal part.

Now that Obama is President, walking on eggshells is over. We hold EVERYONE to the same standards re: sexism and homphobia.

White women were majority opposed. But even that wasn't by what you'd call an overwhelming margin.

It would be much more to the point to figure out how No On 8 bungled this campaign.

Polls indicate that many of the people who ultimately voted yes started out as swing voters who could have been persuaded either way, if anyone had bothered. As it turned out, the Mormons and the Knights of Columbus had the field to themselves.

30. Because many people voted for Obama
to have the first African American president. And most of the African American evangelical Christians are also anti-gay.

Same thing happened in Florida. If you break it down by race, African Americans voted overwhelmingly for Obama (96%). And 71%% of them also voted for Amendment 2 (in FL), the highest number in the state.

31. I think there's something wrong with the numbers in Los Angeles County.

I don't believe that half a million Los Angeles County voters voted for Obama and against us. I don't believe that in a county where Obama did better by 8 pts than statewide, this POS passed by 1%.

I don't believe the media hype that this is about black and Latino voters. There aren't enough black and Latino likely voters in LA County for that to happen and that's where most of those voters are in this state. Likely Latino voters are also the youngest of any group and they vote with Democrats even when they ID themselves as socially conservative. And black voters are only about 10% -- all of them and they ALL didn't vote for this thing. Together, the Latin + black are not even 20% of the "Yes" vote in L.A. County.

I wish someone would check out those numbers because stats are not my thing. Who is monitoring the uncounted ballots for "No on 8"? L.A. County is a mess and remember, they had problems during our primary. If the narrative is rolled out that the black community and religious Latinos carried this prop, I'm afraid people will stop looking at the data.
