Please rec these threads that show our dissatisfaction with inequality
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 12:43 PM by lionesspriyanka
it is not fair nor right, that we get lost on du, the way we did this election.

(not this thread, but all the others that express our feelings on Prop 8 etc)

2. I hear ya, Pri
It is important this issue not be lost in the general elation. We won a great victory last night, but the results in California in particular show we have a long way to go before justice for all is established in this land. But do not be confused by people focusing on the elation. That is only natural. And do not forget that many, many straight people like myself here and elsewhere recognize that gay rights are simply a facet of human rights, and until the rights of gays are secure our own rights are in jeopardy.

We're with ya.

20. That's my point...what "barrier" was broken down last night?
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 04:32 PM by newtothegame
It's not like there's been tons of African-American candidates that appealed to both sides but were denied the presidency because of racism. Most previous AA candidates were to extreme on one side or the other for most of America. The very first AA to run and appeal to both sides and we elect him; what barrier? If you wanna talk about barriers let's talk about actual LAWS that deny equal rights to gays. See my post below.

ed for spelling

23. Your Argument's Disingenous
There have been many African-Americans in the history of this country that may have "appealed to both sides", if one of the sides had previously been able to overlook the fact that the candidate's side was a different color. Obama would not have been the Democratic party nominee 20 years ago, let alone the President-Elect today. This victory is, in fact, a HUGE deal for the African-Americans.

26. I'm happy for them.
Really, I am.

I still think the first act of an Obama administration should be a very popular proposal. Let's call it, "The Kick Out the Gays Act". It'll require some diplomacy to find a country that wants the energy, intelligence, and human capital we can bring, and then ensuring that we all get mandatorily removed from a country that doesn't want us. Hell, we'll even bring Republican Chiefs of Staff with us. We all leave, we never come back, and the country gets what they apparently want so desperately. The only longterm cost will be the constant testing of our young people so they can continue the forced exile of the unwanted.

Obama gets what he wants--a country free of gays. The majority of the Democratic Party gets what they want--a country free of gays. The vast majority of Republicans get what they want. It's a win-win-win.

But I can kick. I find this appalling. My consolation is the thought that with the virtual tectonic shift that occurred last night, the foundation has been laid for genuine equality in the foreseeable future. This is my hope.

19. That's one thing that's always dissapointed me about DU...
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 03:36 PM by newtothegame
There's like a ranked hierarchy of minority groups we care about, and it never changes. Call it a guilty conscience, call it whatever you want:

1. AFRICAN-AMERICANS
2. All other racial minorities
3. Gays
4. Women

Which is very ironic because it is the BOTTOM TWO that have the most blatent laws and policies against them.

I'd like to think that if we had spent as much time organizing the fight against Prop 8 and the pigs that proposed it, as we did questioning whether Palin's womb or her daughter's produced the most recent child, that we could have defeated this thing.

JMHO.

22. While We Have a Right to Be Pissed Off...
...I'm not sure much would be served by bringing everyone else on DU down. We all know there are PLENTY of homophobes on this site, but by and large, the people here are our allies, and they voted FOR us yesterday. As natural as it is for us to be angry about the election results, it's natural for them to be happy. We can hope that they empathize with us, but they can't understand how we really feel, and I don't know if now is the time to try and make them.

There have been several posts in GB and GD:P about Prop 8 already; I think it's safe to say they know we're upset. I think our energies would be better served in a more productive fashion, such as finding out just exactly who voted for Prop 8, and clubbing them to death like baby seals.

Or, wait: second thought...we could just take a few days to be pissed, then square our shoulders and get back to work on getting this thing reversed.
