I have to work with a lot of Mormons - What do I do?
My company contracts with organizations that employ a lot of Mormons. I must admit that I'm currently exceptionally unwilling to cooperate with them. But it would be unprofessional of me to refuse to have anything to do with them, and I can't see anything I can do to make my disgust with their activities known.

Any Suggestions?

1. Why do anything?

You don't know how they voted as individuals, or what's in their hearts.

2. In this job market, the way to win is to keep your job
So keep any anti-M activites strictly off the workplace. Of course, "accidentally" missing a key item every now and then is a little victory for you and the cause.

3. Perhaps keep in mind the fact that most American Catholics
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 12:29 PM by hlthe2b
do not support much of what the Vatican puts forth as edicts--including birth control, pre-marital sex, divorce, homosexuality bans, and in many cases, governmental bans on abortion.

Being Morman does not necessarily equate to following the party line on issues... Ever heard of a "Jack Morman" as, but one exampe? (i.e., those who choose to drink alcohol and related "banned behaviors."

Just sayin.....

10. That's true...up to a point
The point being that every Mormon who tithes helped to fund prop 8.

11. Tithing specifically to Prop 8 opposition would be one thing...

Somewhat of an analogy: I donate regularly to animal causes.... If I found the Denver Dumb Friends League was funneling money to a Repug Senate candidate (which they are most certainly not), I would raise holy hell after the fact. But, certainly I would not expect fellow Dems to demonize me when my funds were meant for animal welfare.

4. Read and employ Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends"
and keep your job. If the subject comes up, use your intellectual tools to try to sway them gently, and logically. As someone else said, regardless of their professed faith, you don't know how they voted, or would vote. You still have to pay the bills.

5. Black people have always worked with and for
others who may or may not wish them harm. Your survival instincts will take over and you will be able to differentiate the good from the bad. You can do this.

6. Assuming you are in a position to do so
take as much of their money as you can, no breaks, no discounts, no favors. Every transaction with them should be by the book in every excruciating bureaucratic detail and don't cut them any slack.

Kind of a passive resistance kind of thing.

8. Currently I'm starting every conversation with...
"Well, now that we've had to put our marriage plans on hold...."

But that only works once with each person.

Where do I go next?

(My company is VERY supportive of LGBT)

9. I don't know that's a good idea to make your disgust known to them preemptively
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 12:38 PM by kenny blankenship
you might devise a way to let them know your disapproval of Prop 8 (no on 8 button?) and let them come to you. If they are sympathetic they will probably let you know.
If they are hostile you will probably see that, too, without more needing to be said.

Don't do anything if it will endanger your business or paycheck. Protect your job, like the other person said. The end goal of organized homophobia is no normal adult life shall be available to homosexuals. No work outside of the gay ghetto, no economic footing above minimum wage service work, drifter status for people who insist on being out, and the schizophrenia of the closet for those who try to swim in the mainstream. That's what they plan for those who can't be driven to prison or suicide.

12. Do your job during the day
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 01:08 PM by Downtown Hound
And do what you need to do at night for the cause. Jobs are not the place for politics, at least that's my philosophy. I only discuss them with people I know are of like mind as I am. If somebody says something I don't agree with, I either let it go or politely offer a disagreement if I feel it's appropriate. But other than that, politics are for you on your own time.

That being said, if it gets too hard for you, then maybe you should look for another job. But I think you can handle it. I've had to work with people I loathe before and be in close proximity to them all day. Think of it as an exercise in discipline and determination.

Or, if you really want to give something your mind to chew on, use the opportunity to spy on the enemy. Learn about them. Learn what makes them tick, what drives them as people, what makes them afraid, what makes them happy. Study them. Know your enemy and know yourself, and victory will always be yours.

do we lump all of CA together even though many have been the most progressive on the issue?
