Schwarzenegger tells backers of gay marriage: Don't give up
The governor expresses hope that Proposition 8 would be overturned as protesters continue to march outside churches across California.

Reporting from Sacramento and Pasadena -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today expressed hope that the California Supreme Court would overturn Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage. He also predicted that the 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who have already married would not be affected by the initiative.

"It's unfortunate, obviously, but it's not the end," Schwarzenegger said in an interview on CNN this morning. "I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area."

3. when's he just gonna leave the Republican party,
he's a liberal, he should face it, not only by marriage, but in policy. This isn't Europe where the right party is actually moderate, but America, where the GOP are a bunch of conservative crazies. Plus, he'd be a lot more popular in CA. He's already known, he doesn't need to be a Republican to "stand out" anymore, as was probably why he chose to be a Hollywood Republican.

7. That veto pen that he's really handy with when it comes to health
care and other social programs could come in useful here I believe. Put the power of the Governor behind your rhetoric Arnold. You can do more and you know it.

8. Propositions can't be vetoed.
Only the California State Supreme Court can "veto" a proposition -- by finding it illegal.

It may or may not happen to Prop 8.

But ... if Arnold really wants to help out, he can direct his Justice Department to NOT recognize the law until ALL appeals have been exhausted.

Meanwhile, there's a movement that needs to find its legs and end anti-GLBT bigotry.

9. That's sort of what I meant.

He needs to put the same enthusiasm in influencing the out come as you suggested as he does with his veto pen on legislation that the majority of the people of California wants but he doesn't want. Sorry my statement wasn't very clear.

14. Is this true?!

Can we start a letter-writing campaign to Schwarzenegger asking him to direct the Justice Dept. to not recognize the law until all appeals are addressed? I thought this was all in courts' hands right now, but if Schwarzenegger can help with the stay, then more power to him!

10. Encouraging
>>Today, Schwarzenegger urged backers of gay marriage to follow the lesson he learned as a bodybuilder trying to lift weights that were too heavy for him at first. "I learned that you should never ever give up. . . . They should never give up. They should be on it and on it until they get it done."

The governor's comments came as protesters took to the streets for a fifth day in a row, sometimes marching to Catholic and Mormon churches that supported passage of the ballot measure with public pronouncements and campaign donations.

Hundreds of protesters gathered down the hills from Saddleback Church, an evangelical mega-church in the Orange County city of Lake Forest, to speak out against Proposition 8. As several thousand congregants attended services inside the church, passing motorists nearby beeped horns in support to demonstrators waving placards that read, "Equal Rights" and "You Cannot Vote Away Civil Rights." The protesters had dispersed by early afternoon.<<

17. this asshole VETOED the same sex marriage bill twice
why the fuck are people falling for his bs ?

if you want to give anyone credit for being with them give to Dianne Feinstein, she made ads speaking out against this. she may suck on other issues, but she deserves credit for what she did on this issue.

19. Yes, you're right, but my point remains, that he shows more support for our civil rights ...
now... than many DUers and other democrats do.

But, yeah, he's no good guy.

21. No, of course, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that his words in the OP show support.
Come on, really, what the fuck, I said "But, yeah, he's no good guy."

What more do you want from me? I would prefer to take him at his word now, just as I would LOVE to hear Obama stand for the same thing, even though they have both said that they are against gay marriage.

Yeah, he's an asshole. Yeah, he vetoed the bill in 2005. I'm not saying he's a good guy. But I am saying that now, three years later, maybe he will support us.

22. he vetoed it again just last year, he is a hypocrite, he always does this
throws out some token words of support without doing much.

but i really believe Barack Obama will improve things in the area of gay rights and maybe in less than 4 years a bill like Prop 8 will not pass in California. i think Obama will also specifically make an appeal to the black church. while he is seen mostly in a negative way now, Rev Wright had a very good record on gay rights and i believe his church performed weddings for gay couples also.

you don't have to believe me, but we will all be able to judge him in the next 4 years.
