Prop 8 Protest Wednesday night at NYC Mormon Temple

Prop 8 Protest in New York at Mormon Temple AGAINST HATE

LGBT New Yorkers and Straight Allies Please Join Us...

Date:
Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Time:
6:30pm - 8:00pm

Location:
New York Manhattan Mormon Temple

Street:
125 Columbus Ave at 65th Street

City/Town:
New York, NY

Tens of thousands of our brothers and sisters are in the streets in California and Salt Lake City and around the country protesting the votes banning same-sex marriage in California.

Join them! Make your voices heard right here in New York City.

We will tell the Mormon Church how we feel about its relentless campaign to condemn and control our lives. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was, by far, the biggest financer of California's heinous and hateful Proposition 8. The Mormon Church begged their members to donate money to Prop 8, pouring 20 million dollars into the campaign. And their attacks on us didn't start there and aren't about to end. They're plotting right now to bring their money and influence to bear against the LGBT community everywhere in this country, including trying to prevent marriage equality in New York.

Join us in speaking out against hate and discrimination! Stop them taking away your rights!

9. I'll be taking pictures.
You'll be there in spirit, though, and hopefully you can make it to a rally on Saturday.

10. Well, some peeps are of that mindset.

I thought this blog had merit.

http://volokh.com/posts/1226172636.shtml

Here's my advice to righteously furious gay-marriage supporters: Stop the focus on the Mormon Church. Stop it now. We just lost a ballot fight in which we were falsely but effectively portrayed as attacking religion. So now some of us attack a religion? People were warned that churches would lose their tax-exempt status, which was untrue. So now we have (frivolous) calls for the Mormon Church to lose its tax-exempt status? It's rather selective indignation, anyway, since lots of demographic groups gave us Prop 8 in different ways — some with money and others with votes. I understand the frustration, but this particular expression of it is wrong and counter-productive.

If a more intense physical expression of anger and frustration is needed, why not have sit-ins at marriage-license bureaus in California? It could be modeled on the sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in the 1960s. The demonstrations would be targeted at government buildings — rather than at churches. And after all, it's government policy we're legitimately protesting, not religious doctrine. Let people get arrested as they sing "We Shall Overcome." The protesters themselves — gay and straight, single and married, black and white, Mormon and Catholic, Republicans and Democrats, moms and dads raising kids — would suffer and accept the legal consequences of their acts. Rather than instilling fear and resentment in others, rather than dividing people on religious and racial lines, they would literally be putting their own bodies on the line for the good of their relationships, their families, their friends, and for a just cause whose time has come. We've had enough of lawyers, courts, focus groups, and media handlers. Let peaceful protesters by the thousands be dragged away just because they want to marry. It would be good old-fashioned civil disobedience, an American protest tradition.

And a friend of mine writes:

"this sort of bothers me. i know they say they want a peaceful demonstration, but the fact that they're protesting at teh temple makes it a secular group versus another secular group. sure they spent a bulk of the funding in support of 8. but we need to appeal to a much bigger base and this protest seems too secular. also it is breeding grounds for religous hate and other nonsense."

She's attending a protest at city hall in NYC on Saturday. Here's some info:

There's a protest being organized for next Saturday at 130pm at City Hall against California's proposition 8. I'm not sure the involvement of the major civil rights organizations but as of Friday (when I may or may not have called them), they weren't organizing anything. I'm hoping something gets worked out this week.

mindset one bit, as a matter of fact that mindset seriously ANNOYS me(in regards to the church, I don't blame blacks). its like letting the perpetrators off because the are a "religion". SCREW THAT!! I will take EXTREME great pleasure in protesting outside the Mormon church if i decide to attend.
