NY conservatives vow to thwart gay marriage bill
(Albany, New York) Republicans and conservative Christian pastors are vowing to block any attempt by New York State’s new Democratic majority to pass marriage equality legislation for gay and lesbian couples.

Legislation to allow same-sex marriage was thwarted in the state Senate earlier this year by a GOP majority after passing the Assembly. Last Tuesday’s election, however, saw Democrats take a slim majority in Senate - prompting hope the bill will be passed in 2009. Gov. David Paterson (D) has said he would sign the bill if it is passed.

With only a two seat majority in the Senate, however, any Democratic bid to revive a marriage equality bill could be opposed by socially conservative members of the party.

Four conservative Democrats already are reportedly considering an alliance with the GOP to oppose the bill. One of the four, Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. (D-Bronx) already has met with the Senate Republican leadership.

1. Not sure how much good it will do
since my state senator just got re-elected, and is a Republican, but I will write to him when this legislation is before the Senate.

Interesting that Ruben Diaz from the Bronx is against this, I would expect this sort of crap from some upstate fundie.

4. So that's what they mean by reaching across the aisle?
>>Four conservative Democrats already are reportedly considering an alliance with the GOP to oppose the bill.<<

:banghead:

At least something positive:

>> A Quinnipiac poll in June showed New Yorkers split over gay marriage, with 42 percent saying same-sex couples should be allowed to legally marry, 31 percent saying they should be allowed to form civil unions but not marry, and 21 percent saying there should be no legal recognition of same-sex unions.

However, 53 percent of voters supported Paterson’s order to state agencies to recognize same-sex marriages performed outside New York, while 40 percent disapproved.<<

5. I want the marriages of conservatives banned! ! !
ALL the people should be able to vote on whether the immoral Republicans should be allowed to wed.

While they may be able to procreate they sure as hell shouldn't be allowed to do so?

7. Exactly. If conservatives can manufacture "facts". . .so can we. .
How hard would it be to skew something just enough to make Republicans appear to be overwhelmingly the worst family units? With the most dysfunctional relationships? The most incidents of violence and child abuse? The most frequently willing to dump rejected children onto the state for upbringing?

8. Once again, more Democrats who are against us.

Aren't there a few Republicans up there who are a little better on gay rights than your standard right wing moronic asshole Republican? Or is that a total myth too? If there are any, case we trade those four Democrats for them when the time comes? When its over they can have the Republicans back for other things and keep those four hate mongering Democrats AFAIAC.

9. Remember that at one time it was the Democrats that supported segregation
and Northern Democrats were told not to say anything to offend their Southern brethren.
