Check in here if you are attending Saturday's protest against Prop 8.
You can also use this thread to network with others in your area to organize transportation, meet-up suggestions or sign ideas.

http://jointheimpact.com/

I just saw tonight that a few New Yorkers missed out on our protest meet-up on Wednesday night, so let's try and keep this thread kicked though Saturday to make sure the message gets out about Saturday's nationwide protest!

Huge Prop 8 Protest
Saturday, November 15th

Please forward and repost to help spread the word. San Diego will be taking part in nationwide protests against Proposition 8 this Saturday. There are 2 coordinated events happening in San Diego. The first one is a march which starts at 10:30am at 6th & Upas in Balboa Park. The march will go through downtown and will end at the rally site at the County Administration Building.

At 1pm there will be a huge rally at the County Administration Building. It's located at 1600 N. Harbor Drive right near the Star of India on the bay. This is going to be a huge event and we expect well over 20,000 people and we expect national media attention. We encourage everyone to come out and protest Prop 8 and stand up for equal rights for every one. If you can' t make the march, come straight to the rally site at 1pm.

Please make a big effort to reach outside of our community for support. Invite your family, tell your co-workers, knock on your neighbor's door, make calls and send texts. If individual rights can be taken away by a simple majority vote, who is next? We must unite and fight for our rights. Please note, however, that this will be a positive and peaceful protest.

We are also going to attempt a world record human rainbow flag attempt. This will consist of thousands of people holding up colored posterboard. It's going to be quite a sight and is sure to get us national exposure.

Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 01:52 PM by Blue_In_AK
as to whether the rally is at 9:30, to coincide with the ones down south, or noon, which will likely draw more people since it's just starting to get light here now (9:45). I'll probably be heading downtown in about half an hour and see what's going on. I'll post pictures for you all later. :)

I hope there's a huge turnout nationwide. I'm hetero, but this is a civil rights issue, and I'm 100% with you.

Oh, and I guess I should say this is Anchorage. Rallies will be held in Anchorage and Fairbanks today that I know of, and Juneau will most likely be having one, too. :)

70. Great turnout today- beautiful weather.
I was really impressed with one of the speakers in particular, Freddie Oakley, who is the Yolo County Clerk Recorder. Somebody needs to talk her into running for a state-wide office. Mayors Fargo and Cabaldon (of Sacramento and West Sacramento respectively) also spoke and did a great job.

Unfortunately organization seemed to break down between the rally at Cesar Chavez park and the march around city hall and the state capitol. In particular, the line of people got too spread out, which kinda dissipated energy and led to some really anemic, half-assed chants, and once everybody finally made it to the west steps the "sound system" was a really weak megaphone, which really wan't up to the task, so almost nobody could hear the end of the rally. Still, for something thrown together last minute, you're doing pretty well if that's the worst of your problems.

I got to say hi to cboy4 but did not run into any other DUers.

:woohoo: I just got back from an Equality rally in Walnut Creek about 500
people at it's peak . It was a beautiful day for a protest at 85 degrees
in November .

The indymedia sites have pictures . A bunch of people liked my
sign the 14th amendment on one side and "I'm a straight wife and mother
who wants equal rights for all, Not a Narrow Bigot "on the
other side . They took my picture and thanked me ... There were a lot of straights there also lots of families .

73. Costa Mesa had a great protest.
Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 06:54 PM by Kajsa
There were a couple hundred( maybe more) people lining both sides of Bear St. near
a huge intersection in front of two major shopping malls.

Everyone was there-including their kids and dogs, it was great.
But it was very hot and I'm not making much sense now.

We got a lot of support from passing motorists and only one
heckler in the several hours I was there.

:) We are changing the dynamics of OC!

74. Checking back in from Greensboro
I have a post up with a link to pix. We had over 300 people, a respectable crowd for central NC. Lots and lots of cars honked their horns in support and great whoops went up from the crowd. There was a lot of good, loving energy there and lots of hetero families came out to show solidarity.
