School hate crime probed - swastika and anti-gay slur on a student's locker

SAUGUS - Sheriff's deputies are investigating an apparent hate crime at Saugus High School in which someone drew a swastika and wrote an anti-gay slur on a student's locker.

The mother of the student whose gym locker was vandalized said her son and his twin brother discovered it Wednesday morning.

Her son Todd, a 15-year-old sophomore, is Jewish, but he is not gay, she said.

"They were mortified. They were frightened by the experience," said Marcia Davis, who works as an instructional assistant at Saugus.

"It's not random. Somebody knows he is Jewish and is intentionally doing this."

I would never teach my child hate.

It's like child abuse - if that child hates, that child will suffer, as well as those around him or her.

2. Despicable and very sad.

Sounds like one of the types of stories I read about in the "Intelligence Report" put out by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Since last Wednesday I have been looking back at some of the crimes reported in the quarterly roundup, and I'm seeing how vicious and unfair and common these sorts of crimes are. It's very upsetting. And I'm worried there will be an increase.
