5. Here you go...from NY Times |
|
"In Las Vegas, the comedian Wanda Sykes surprised a crowd of more than 1,000 rallying outside a gay community center by announcing that she is gay and had wed her wife in California on Oct. 25. Ms. Sykes, who divorced her husband of seven years in 1998, had never publicly discussed her sexual orientation but said the passage of Proposition 8 had propelled her to be open about it. “I felt like I was being attacked, personally attacked — our community was attacked,” she told the crowd".

30. queerty had a piece about how she was peeking out of the closet about a month ago. |
|
We shrugged and agreed that it came as no surprise. I still cheered and totally started bawling when I heard the news this evening.
Protesting with you and Pri on Wednesday and then protesting this afternoon with my man, I think my emotions were pretty much heightened and just came to a head with hearing this news tonight.
As gloomy as I was about the movement after the election I feel reinvigorated since then.

40. I was never that involved with the gay movement . |
|
I felt more a part of the more recent anti-war movement, which seems to have fizzled. It seems to me the height of the gay movement was the 70's thru early 90's when i was either too young, closeted and isolated geographically or too busy being quiet about myself in the military later on.

Having Wanda on our team is a real victory for us.

I went to the Cindi Lauper True Colors concert at the Woodlands Pavilian in Houston, TX just a few months back. Wanda was the opening act, and had made several humerous references to her woman in that act... I'd already thought she was out?

Are we supposed to like her more because she's gay? Does being gay make her more talented as a comedian?
I even read one post that referred to her as "being on the team". This isn't a baseball game, people.
What's with all the hypocrisy? Isn't liking her more because she's gay the same as someone not liking her because she's gay? We're Democrats, people. We're the ones fighting for equal rights, equal pay, financial responsibility, and health care.
It's seems to me like all the cheering is ignoring the fact that we have the responsibility to remove the LGBT prejudice by educating people and practicing as we preach.
I don't want to ruffle any feathers here so I'll just leave it at that.
