Have you lost DU friends after the Prop 8 issue?
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 04:16 PM by lionesspriyanka
People whom you use to like, but are dismissive of your rights, so you no longer can call them friends?

(please dont name names.. just curious if others feel like i do)

On a more positive note(edited after seeing tekisui's response): i personally feel much closer to the glbt community here and for our supporters. I have been amazed at how this travesty has brough us closer as a community

1. No. But I suppose the issue is different for me.
I haven't been on as much lately; very busy with work, so I think I missed a great deal of the shit stirring.

14. My buddy list has 38 homophobic members.
I add them to that so that I can still see there posts, but remember that they are no real friend.

17. Also a good idea.
My way, however, you can see any new journal entries they make in My DU. :)

I just put people like the late Radio Lady on PM ignore. People who actually PM me harassing shit.

:)

18. I recently put one DUer on ignore after they sent me a harassing PM.
It's the first one I've received but the sender didn't surprise me.

29. That is a really good idea.
I have a buddy list and reverse buddy list, but they are all combined into one. Putting them on PM ignore to mark is a great idea.

2. Not really. Everyone I liked already was against it from the go.
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 04:16 PM by YOY
Anyone outside of it can kiss my ass.

I do think that we have to keep in mind that the right wing uses this as a wedge issue..easier said from 1000 miles up than to realize this on a personal level.

Hell, I've only been accused of being a "gay basher" once during the primaries when that fake "agirl" posted some fake-ass shit-stirring BS and then dared to call me anti-gay for arguing against someone who supposedly was "transgendered" on a subject that had nothing to do with sexuality what-so-ever...several DUers jumped on me back then but I just asked "where was I homophobic" and they jumped off.

Glad that one got the tombstone.

3. Nope.
But it sure reinforced my thoughts about some posters that harbor bigoted attitudes toward another group. Hate one group, chances are the person hates other groups as well.

5. I can say that I feel I have gained many.
I have a renewed commitment and motivation to make GLBT Rights an object of my efforts and energy. I went to the protest/rally this Saturday and was moved to tears many times. I stand with you and am sorry that you have lost some friends, but know that you have gained fighters.

I was always supportive, but my eyes have been open to the seriousness of the institutionalized discrimination, to the point I can no longer stand idly by.:pals:

6. My DU friends that I spend the most time talking to are very supportive.
There have been a few that I've talked to in the past, but I'm not very close to, who've disappointed me. My ratio of supportive to non supportive has been very good, actually.

Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 04:31 PM by RufusTFirefly
Honestly, when I try to ponder the concept of "good reasons" for supporting Prop H8...

Bigotry, stupidity, or misinformation can be the only explanations for people who support Prop H8
On the other hand, those who don't fully appreciate the significance of Prop H8 is another matter.
Luckily, for those who haven't seen it already, nichomachus has provided a clear and eloquent explanation of why opposing Prop H8 is important to everyone.

9. not really. I also would never put anybody on ignore that was
saying anti-gay stuff or being dismissive of our rights. If we all did that nobody would be around to call them out.

10. I feel as if I've gained some, hopefully
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 04:22 PM by Mike 03
The debate here at DU completely awoke me out of a slumber of not paying nearly enough attention as I should have been to this issue. It sliced my heart open, for want of a better metaphor. Prior to November 5, I had never even visited the GLBT forum before, and now I check it every time I come to DU to see what people are saying here. It's too early to call you my friends, perhaps, but I never felt this close to this community before. Thank you for welcoming here. You can count on me to stand up with you.

ON EDIT:

Maybe I will lose some friends, because I'm very aware now of some of the homophobic things that are said here. I'm unlikely to strike up friendships with anyone who is hateful in that way.

28. Thank you. Your words mean a lot.
This past week reminded me why I still care about this world and the people in it. I lost hope for such a long time after Gore lost to Bush, and even worse after Kerry lost in 2004. I stopped caring about anything, but that was wrong of me. These past two weeks my values have been reawakened.

I suddenly care about my fellow human beings for the first time in a long time. And I recognize where I was not doing enough. And I regret it. But I feel courage and determination to make it right. It feels so good to remember what is right, and the reason DU is so important to me is because at least there is some sort of reference point to get back aboard this train of doing the right thing, being with the right people and just being grateful and determined to turn injustices to justices.

Thank you for forgiving and bearing with some of us who were late to the party. But I'm here to stay.

I would bet my life, if there were a way to prove it, that there were DUers who voted YES on Prop 8.

16. No, but I'd carefully culled my friends of homophobes over the years.
I drop friends who reveal themselves to be bigots. I've never tried to change anyone's mind. I figure if they are grownups and still hold bigoted views it is unlikely that I will change their mind. I just don't waste my time with them anymore.

23. no, but if I have, I don't really care
If someone truly thinks that denying equal rights to anyone is the "moral" decision, then I don't really want their friendship. Or never really had it in the first place.

32. No, but I've gained more affinity for other gay people.
I had shied away from the lgbt movement for some time, and focused on other areas of work. I had felt somewhat alienated from what I perceived as a certain stodginess in the movement in my area. Well, with the anti-8 movement, this is changing quickly. So lgbt issues in general are now a high priority for me.
