Gay-Straight Alliance seeks equality at East

Last Wednesday afternoon, three Omaha men stood at the entrances to Bellevue East with signs that read "Homosexuality is a sin," "Jesus Christ can set you free" and "Gay: God calls it a sin."

Mark Morin, who was handing out literature at the Lincoln Road entrance to the school, said he and the others have protested at several high schools in the metro area. They were drawn to East after reading a recent article in the Omaha World-Herald regarding the Gay-Straight Alliance's attempts to become an official school-sponsored club.

The group was recently told by school administration that it cannot become an official club under the GSA name, but it could join the school-sanctioned Diversity Club.

In the 2008-09 student handbook, the first time the Diversity Club has been listed since it was disbanded a few years ago, the club is said to promote "understanding of a variety of ethnic and life experiences and cultures" and "foster activities that provide for appropriate recognition and observance of selected ethnic holidays and respect for all people."

Morin said high schools are an important site for their protests.

"They're a bastion for indoctrination on this particular issue," Morin said. "They're indoctrinating young people that this is an alternative lifestyle, that this is just the way people are. We have a biblical world view, and the Bible says that marriage - let alone relationships - are one man, one woman."

1. And the biblical world view isn't indoctrination?

2. This is so dumb.
We started a GSA in our high school this year, and didn't hear a peep from anyone. Totally given the thumbs up even from our board and superintendent.
