Can we come up with a better term than "GLBT?" |
|
It always sounds like "Gay, Lesbian, Bacon, and Tomato" to me.

It's gay, lettuce, bacon, and tomato. Or maybe even: Grey Poupon, lettuce, bacon, and tomato.

Gay Lettuce is always a bit flamboyant, and just doesn't seem to understand the concept of "sensible shoes". ;-)

I know a lot of people don't care for it, but to me it's a word that encompasses all of the lgbt community that we can take back from the homophobes who use it as a weapon against us.

21. No. Here's how Wordsmyth.com defines Queer: |
|
>>>>>>1. strange, unusual, or unexpected; eccentric; odd. Example He has queer ideas about life. Synonyms singular (3) , offbeat , strange (1) , weird (1) , odd (1) , funny (3) , peculiar (1) , eccentric (1)
We are *none* of these things; based on our * sexuality *, anyway. That's the whole *freaking* point: there's no reason to believe... and plenty of reason NOT to believe.... that homosexuality, bisexuality or transgenderism is " strange, unusuaual, unexpected, eccentric or odd."
On the contrary, the evidence indicates that the above orientations are commonplace, usual, expected, mainstream and ordinary.
"Queer" is therefore based on a lie.... created by a majority to stigmatize a minority.

41. Queer is used in academic settings because "Gay" has culturally specific meanings. |
|
It's also trans exclusive. In other words, you can't really study call eunuchs in Byzantium "gay" and calling Native American "nadle" shaman and warriors "gay" is really problematic cultural appropriation.
Reducing us to "sexuality" is problematic in itself as well. Gilgamesh clearly loved Enkidu as a partner, but there is no evidence of "sexuality". Likewise focusing on "sexuality" undermines transgender history, which is way richer than "same-sex" history because the history of the body and sexuation itself is very complicated. Are hijras a part of 'gay' history? It's hard to say.
On the other hand, focusing on "love, eros, and coupling" desexualizes us as well. We might choose include asexual "romantic friendships" of women in 19th century England to lesbian history, but exclude 20th century pansexual orgies.
I agree that "queer" is a questionable term, but for me its because the word redefines heteronormativity as the norm even while celebrating our outsider status.

can't it just be the gays? i always thought gay was a word that encompassed woman, as well as men. i also quite like "homosexual" but most of the gays seem not to, so i know i'm alone on that one.
and i will never say queer, ever. hate it so much, i can't even put it into words. but i realize that others like the word, so i don't take offense when they use it, but it doesn't cross my lips.

And, I just came back from an equality march (NO-ON-H8).

Did have to put all those pictures up? A Californian can never go for long without a BLAT.

I love a BLT.
I usually force myself to go ahead and type GLBT because I want to include as many of our community as I can. "Gay" suits me just fine across the board. Even though I'm female, I usually just call myself gay. I don't know what would be best though. I'm just saying what comes the most natural, to me.
