They expect 10,000 strong at the Sacramento Prop 8 protest

"TAKE IT TO SACRAMENTO" THIS SATURDAY WITH PROTEST AT STATE CAPITOL BUILDING

State and local politicians, celebrities, religious dignitaries, corporate sponsors, and community leaders to attend in support of the cause

WHO: The following people will participate in "Take it to Sacramento" including Gloria Allred, lead attorney who won the marriage case in the Supreme Court in May on behalf of two same gender couples and whose case challenging Prop. 8 has just been accepted for review by the Supreme Court; Comedians Margaret Cho and Selene Luna; Senator Darryl Steinberg, CA 6th District; John Duran, Mayor of West Hollywood; John Lewis and Stuart Gaffney, accomplished Marriage Equality USA Speakers and plaintiffs; Brad Wright, PFLAG Board Member and many others.

WHAT: On Saturday, November 22 at 2:00pm PST, equal-minded citizens from across the state and country will take part in "Take it to Sacramento", a massive protest against the bigoted and hateful Proposition 8 on the steps of our State Capitol Building in Sacramento, CA. With an estimated attendance larger than any other gay rights demonstration to ever take place in the state, this event promises to send a clear message to the state and the nation that civil rights are inalienable among all its citizens.

Los Angeles-based California Outreach and Sacramento-based Equality Action Now have teamed up to organize this historic event, and the outpouring of support has already been incredible. There is no better or more urgent time than now for this to happen. With the recent announcement that the State Supreme Court will be taking up the case, it is absolutely crucial that we get out there as a community and show our unified strength and unwavering commitment to civil rights. With all of us standing together to fight this hateful measure, we will be an unparalleled force fighting for equality and justice. Together we will be heard, together we will fight, and together we will win! This is nothing less than history in the making!

3. Hmm?
The text says:

"With an estimated attendance larger than any other gay rights demonstration to ever take place in the state, this event promises to send a clear message to the state and the nation that civil rights are inalienable among all its citizens."

Earlier releases say the largest in Sacramento before was 15,000 people. Last week in San Diego we had 20,000 to 25,000 at our March - so how can 10,000 be the largest in the state? Is that a typo?

4. They were originally hoping for 30,000
Looks like they've lowered their expectations for turnout.

7. The media here is already reporting its a flop because they originally
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 03:31 PM by FreeState
announced they wanted 1 million people to show up. Im in San Diego - thats the problem - when you set expectations the media will focus on those rather than the message. There is nothing wrong with being critical of poor organisation - no matter who or what the cause.

If we cant control the spin of the media we lose no matter what.
