Meet the Man Who Authored DOMA
Our lives are determined by people such as these!!?
Opportunistic at best, useful idiots (to their own ambition and their master du jour) at worst.

These are the creatures who claim to speak for the silent majority, to protect the “American family”, to protect “our values?” You have got to be kidding me that parasites such as this creature sit in judgement of our lives!

This is the man who authored DOMA.

.......
http://www.gayguidemiami.com/gay-families/gay-marriage/antigay-marriage-groups-fight-doma/
The Man Who Authored DOMA:

“ The legislation (DOMA) was authored by then-Republican Georgia Representative Bob Barr and signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton in 1996.

Proponents argued that without the legislation gay activists would win the right to marry in a single state and foist it upon the rest of the nation.

In the mid-1990’s such a state was Hawaii. In 1993, the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled in Baehr v. Lewin that it was unconstitutional to refuse gay couples the right to marry. However, the court stayed the ruling and by 1998 the state had passed the first-ever gay marriage ban amendment in the United States, essentially overruling the court’s decision.” (1)

So who is Bob Barr, this paragon of “family values” who authored DOMA and how does his private life stack up to his own press propaganda?

“Barr was born on November 5, 1948, in Iowa City, Iowato Bob and Beatrice Barr.

The second of six children, Bob Jr. spent his boyhood in Malaysia, Pakistan, Panama, Baghdad in Iraq,<14> and finally Tehran, Iran where he graduated from Community High School in 1966.”

Perhaps he is a latent Muslim? :sarcasm: Ever hear that before about someone educated in schools over seas?

“Barr returned to the United States, attending the University of Southern California...
Barr also joined the Young Democrats of America and rallied against the Vietnam War....His parents disapproved, and threatened to cut off financial support if he continued his "flaming liberal" activities.

During this time, Barr's mother introduced him to the work of Ayn Rand. This fostered a new-found appreciation for conservatism and prompted Barr to join the Young Trojan Republican Club.

Family Man, Family Man, and on a third try Family Man (?)

Barr married his first wife while still in college. They divorced in 1976.
Barr married his second wife, Gail, in 1976.
Gail and Bob Barr divorced in 1986.
In 1986 Barr married his third wife, Jerilyn Dobbins

Career:

From 1971 to 1978, Barr was employed by the Central Intelligence Agency.
Barr made an unsuccessful bid for the Georgia House of Representatives in 1984.
In 1986, Barr was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia—a post Barr held until 1990.
Barr sought the Republican Party nomination for U.S. Senate in 1992, but lost the primary election to Paul Coverdell.
Barr was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994.
Barr was later re-elected three times, serving from 1995 to 2003

Positions:

During his tenure, Barr was regarded as one of the most conservative members of Congress. In 2002, he was described as "the idol of the gun-toting, abortion-fighting, IRS-hating hard right wing of American politics".

Barr advocated complete federal prohibition of medical marijuana. In 1998, He successfully blocked implementation of Initiative 59 — the "Legalization of Marijuana for Medical Treatment Initiative of 1998" — which would have legalized medical marijuana in Washington, D.C.

This preemptively blocked future attempts by Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) to reform marijuana laws in DC via the initiative process.

Then the Epiphany as a Paid Lobbyist:

Barr would later reverse his position on medical marijuana, joining MPP as a lobbyist five years later. In a June 4, 2008 interview with Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report, Barr confirmed that he now supports ending marijuana prohibition, as well as the War on Drugs for which he once vehemently fought.”

First He Authored it then was Against It(?)

Same-sex marriage
Barr took a lead in legislative debate concerning same-sex marriage. He authored and sponsored the Defense of Marriage Act, a law enacted in 1996 which states that only marriages that are between a man and a woman can be federally recognized, and individual states may choose not to recognize a same-sex marriage performed in another state.<52> At the 2008 Libertarian National Convention, he apologized for the part of the Defense of Marriage Act which prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.<53>

He now opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment, contending it is a violation of states' rights.

Terrorism
He voted for the first Patriot Act, but only after his amendments adding "sunset clauses" were added to the final bill.<56> Barr played a similar role during the debate over Bill Clinton's Comprehensive Anti-terrorism Act of 1995, crafting pro-civil liberties amendments to the original text.<[br />
He now publicly regrets his Patriot Act vote.

War in Iraq
In 2002 Barr voted for the Iraq Resolution.

He has since called for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, leaving no permanent military bases.”

Vast right wing Conspiracy? True or... who we kidding?

Role in Clinton impeachment

Barr is best known for his role as one of the House managers during the Clinton impeachment trial. It was Barr who first introduced a resolution directing Judiciary Committee to inquire into impeachment proceedings—months before the Monica Lewinsky scandal came to light. Foremost among the concerns Barr cited at the time was apparent obstruction of Justice Department investigations into Clinton campaign fundraising from foreign sources, chiefly the People's Republic of China.<68>

After the Lewinsky scandal came to light, Barr was the first lawmaker in either chamber to call for Clinton's resignation.

Controversies over Barr's personal conduct

In 1999, during Clinton's impeachment trial, Hustler publisher Larry Flynt offered money to anyone who could provide evidence that a prominent Republican had engaged in an extramarital affair...according to a sworn affidavit by Barr's ex-wife Gail, Bob Barr - a longtime outspoken abortion foe had acquiesced in his then-wife having an abortion in 1983 and has indeed paid for it. In accordance with his public offer, Flynt subsequently paid a sum of money to Gail Barr after she had made her sworn affidavit.Barr never publicly disputed the contents of his ex-wife's affidavit.

Investigators also reported that Barr invoked a legal privilege during his 1985 divorce proceeding, so he could refuse to answer questions on whether he'd cheated on his second wife with the woman who is now his third."

In the early 1990s, Barr was photographed at a fundraising event licking whipped cream off of a woman. According to the Washington Post "Two people who observed the act say it wasn't exactly a bosom lick but more like a neckline lick, at the sort of event where business and civic leaders perform dares to raise money. 'Not exactly Mr. Effusive', says Matt Towery, the former chairman of Newt Gingrich's political organization, who observed the brief and awkward licking. 'You can hardly get the guy to smile'".

Departure from Republican Party
In the 2004 presidential election, Barr abandoned the Republican Party and publicly endorsed the Libertarian Party presidential nominee Michael Badnarik.<80>

In 2006, he joined the Libertarian Party as a regional representative, then serving on the Libertarian National Committee.

On May 25, 2008 Barr became the 2008 Libertarian presidential nominee after six rounds of voting at the 2008 Libertarian convention.” (2)

but this guy and his three "family values" marriages????? That was one of the things that really pissed me off as I read about him - that and how he pushed the rabid-right agenda on DOMA and now recants it? I wonder who paid him to be the spokespig back then? Follow the money.

Just goes to show you were are/were simply being used as a poltical football in a most cynical way having to with our lives and their quest for power.

Now, that the damage is done he doesn't give a damn about it. :evilfrown:

I bet this crap and their sordid lives would never get by, as it did in the early 1990's, this would be out on the inter net in hours.

9. Bill Clinton could have vetoed DOMA, but he didn't!
In defense of Bob Barr, he redeemed himself when he broke with Bush's unconstitutional abuses of power. Barr defended the Constitution while people like Nancy Pelosi were putting impeachment off the table, mainly to cover up their own culpability in Bush's crimes.

Let's face it, we got more than our share of homophobes among Democratic ranks.

10. I know.
I honestly don't know why he didn't veto it. Was it just expediency, that old phrase: you need consensus to govern?

Because, if that was it, history doesn't seem like it paid off. A lesson for modern day pols who don't want to rock the boat and want to shelve pro- g-m legislation to build coalitions?

Barr's changes are puzzling, too. Why he went from repug front man to the libertarian approach? I just assumed he was used up in the repug party, like Pat Buchannan who had to go off and be an independent for his Pres. bid.

11. He also signed to get re-elected in 1996
Edited on Sun Nov-30-08 03:53 AM by bluedawg12
here is a recent attempt to interview him about this, also has a video link:

http://www.queerty.com/bill-clinton-blasts-students-doma-challenge-20080324/
Bill Clinton Blasts Student's DOMA Challenge

The former president gets a little snap happy with Smith College journalist Lily Lamboy when their conversation turns to the Defense of Marriage Act, which "Bubba" signed in 1996. That law effectively protects states from other states' marriage laws, ie: a Massachusetts marriage does not have to be honored in Utah, an example that comes up numerous times in this heated exchange.

We have to give Lamboy credit, because girl's got balls. She started the conversation by quoting singer Melissa Etheridge, who last year accused the Clintons of "throwing the gays under the bus" with regard to DOMA, which many gays consider to be an impediment to equality. Clinton doesn't agree and justifies his actions by putting them in context. Lamboy, bless her, then presses him on his beliefs, but he's quick to remind her that it's Hillary who matters. It's downhill from there:

BC: Let me ask you this: do you believe there will be more or fewer efforts to ban gay marriage constitutionally around the country if a Massachusetts marriage has to be sanctified in Utah?

LL: I -

BC: Yes or no. Answer the question. We live in the real world here.

LL: Sir, I understand. It's a political backlash.

BC: No, not a political backlash. As a substantive backlash: the lives of gay people. Will there be more or fewer gay couples free of harassment if the law is that every gay couple in America could go to Massachusetts, get married and it would then had it recognized in Utah?

LL: But when is that going to change if you're not going to set a firm stance.

BC: So you don't care what the practical implications are?

It's at about this point that Lamboy broke down in tears. Psych, she handled herself like a pro.

..........
ETA to add this:

http://www.floridablade.com/2008/3-6/view/letters/4487.cfm

It becomes tiresome to read overstated fears and condemnations of Republican policies and politicians that oppose any variation of gay marriage, while conspiring to give the often two-faced Democratic Party very wide latitude to abandon us whenever it is expedient.

An example of this was the 1996 re-election of President Bill Clinton, who was supported by nearly all gay activists. Yet few gay voters seem to be aware that not only did Bill Clinton sign the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman, but Mr. Clinton also spent millions of campaign dollars to buy commercials promoting his allegiance to traditional marriage on large right-wing Christian talk radio stations. In doing so, Mr. Clinton dramatically cut into the GOP’s Christian Right bloc of voters and ensured his re-election. Clinton clearly out-foxed the Republicans that year on the issue of gay marriage, but he also betrayed his gay supporters who nonetheless cheered him on and even bestowed upon him over $6 million in campaign contributions.

I am a life-long Democrat who may vote for John McCain, and I often wonder why the gay community allows prominent Democratic office holders a perpetual pass even if these Democrats betray us whenever it is convenient for them. ...

37. CIA , KGB, James Bond and the "honeypot"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clandestine_HUMINT_asset_recruiting#Sex.2C_honeypots_and_recruitment

If one paid attention only to the fictional James Bond, little besides sex would be involved in recruitment. The reality is different, although the details will vary with countries, cultures, legality of the sexual contact, and other aspects of a specific situation. US intelligence services, for example, are concerned when their own personnel could be subject to sexual blackmail. This applied to any homosexual relationship until the mid-1990s, and also applied to heterosexual relationships with most foreign nationals.

One former CIA officer said that while sexual entrapment wasn't generally a good tool to recruit a foreign official, it was sometimes employed successfully to solve short-term problems. Seduction is a classic technique; "swallow" was the KGB tradecraft term for women, and "raven" the term for men, trained to seduce intelligence targets <13>.

The Soviets used sex not only for direct recruitment, but as a contingency where an American officer might need to be compromised in the future. The CIA itself made limited use of sexual recruitment against foreign intelligence services. "Coercive recruitment generally didn't work. We found that offers of money and freedom worked better."<12> If the Agency found a Soviet intelligence officer had a girlfriend, they would try to recruit the girlfriend as an access agent. Once the CIA personnel had access to the Soviet officer, they might attempt to double him.

Examples of honey pot operations:

Clayton J. Lonetree, a Marine Sergeant embassy guard in Moscow, was entrapped by a female Soviet officer in 1987. He was then blackmailed into handing over documents when he was assigned to Vienna. Lonetree is the first US Marine to be convicted of spying against the United States.
Roy Rhodes, a US Army NCO serving at the US embassy in Moscow, had a one-night stand (or was made to believe he had) with a Soviet agent while drunk. He was later told the agent was pregnant, and that unless he co-operated with the Soviet authorities, this would be revealed to his wife.
Irvin Scarbeck, a US diplomat, was entrapped by a female Polish officer in 1961, and photographed in a compromising position. He was blackmailed into providing secrets.

Development: preparation for actual recruitment
Actual recruiting involves a direct approach by a case officer who has some existing access to the potential recruit, an indirect approach through an access agent or proprietary, or has reason to risk a "cold" approach. Before the direct recruitment, there may be a delicate period of development.

The case officer, possibly through an access agent, works on establishing a relationship. This phase, in which the potential agent is called a developmental, has not yet reached the recruiting pitch. "After the cultivation stage, overt contact is established with the candidate under the guise of an official meeting. After the acquaintanceship has ripened and official meetings evolve into personal meetings, the developmental stage begins. <6>

12. The logic escapes me........
One is redeemed when one sees the error and admits it is wrong. It's not a zero sum game. What you have here is akin to the battered wife telling her mother, "I know the bruises look bad, but he's so good to the kids."

As for the constitution, I fear his defense of that august document is as selective as his new libertarian views.

15. IMO
The people who like to call Clinton out on DOMA and Don't ask Don't tell, weren't around in those days and don't know what the climate was back then.

The Clintons were the first national politicians to even *TRY* where our rights were concerned.

Nope, they weren't perfect, but they didn't have the votes. These fuckers in NY who have the votes and are turning their backs on us? They have no excuse.

Back in the early and mid nineties, even half the Democratic party was against recognizing us LGBT'ers as human beings worthy or rights and protections - it's changed for the better in the past decade and a half, but I want it to change faster, DAMMIT!

One of the most awesome things about my state is that in the last Senate race which was Chafee/Whitehouse, during their televised debate, both were asked - are you for or against gay marriage -- both Chafee and Whitehouse both said "for" -- no hesitation, no equivocation -- and it was never an issue. No one screamed for their heads - it was barely even mentioned. To me, they both displayed leadership.

My personal feeling was that Whitehouse didn't have a choice, since the Repblican was for full marriage equality, LOL! And it was such a close race - I love Chafee, but I couldn't vote for him because the Senate was at stake.
