US Cigarettes Have 10% More Nicotine Today Than Six Years Ago
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/healthnews.php?newsid=50797

All tobacco brands have been increasing the nicotine dosage in each cigarette steadily during the last six years, says a report from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The overall increase has been about 10% during 1998-2004. The higher the nicotine dose, the more hooked you get - it is much more difficult to quit.

The only conclusion one could come to is that the tobacco industry has taken steps to secure sales by making people more addicted.

Massachusetts is the only US state with information on the nicotine content of cigarettes since 1998. It is also one of only three states that makes it compulsory for cigarette companies to submit data about nicotine.

Marlboro, the most popular brand, has been steadily raising the dosage in each cigarette. Kool, a popular menthol brand, has had its nicotine dose increased by 20% in six years. Over 60% of African-American smokers consume menthol brands.

Of concern to many parents is this quote from the report:
"Marlboro, Newport, and Camel, the three most popular brands chosen by young smokers, all delivered significantly more nicotine."

1. Good. since we can't enjoy a nice leisurely smoke, and have to go outside
and hammer one down as quickly as possible, at least we can get our money's worth.

7. I could still do that were it not for the knee, the hip, and the shoulder.
Let me have a walking staff and I bet I could still climb. And could wait for a cig until I got to the top, like I used to. While waiting for the others to catch up, like I used to.

I'd regret it the next day, but I've always been stupid like that.

9. Same with me for riding a bicycle. I shouldn't do it, but I can't stop,
because dammit, I can't stop. I suppose a couple of miles would be OK, but I'm not satisfied with that. I'm just a fool for riding.

12. We have a deal on the house in Lancaster. This one is on the market
as of today. The second we get our cutoff price for this house, we're headed North.

Crossed fingers, please.

17. Marlboro's boosted the nicotine aldehydes for years
by heavily sugaring their tobacco. I'm not a bit surprised they've been boosting the nicotine, too, along with other brands who've had to imitate them to keep their own market share.

Anything to keep stupid teenagers hooked for life.

Remember those low nicotine cigarettes 30 years ago? They found out addicts just smoked more of them to get the same hit. I'll be surprised if the nicotine content doesn't start to drop soon as a way to boost sales even more.
