I am alive and well and kicking! The hip replacement went great
and I am now a bilateral heavy metal hippie with dual tiatnium rods, quite suitable for kicking all sorts of ass! I missed you all a lot while I was gone. The computer in the rehab was down and I really missed my daily fix of real news. I did not even bother to turn on the tv in the room since all that I would have gotten would have been the Bushco talking points. That would have been a definate impediment to healing.

Although the surgery was only two weeks ago, I am already able to put full weight on the surgical leg. When I had the other side done four years ago, it took me at least two months to get to this point of recovery. There has been a lot of improvement in the surgical proceedures in the last four years, and I am living proof of the imrpovements. Sports medicine is no doubt the prime factor behind the major breakthrows.

As I return to DU, I am so touched by the contrast of my recovery and that of the wives of Jack Rabbit and The Straight Story. How my heart goes out to them. I know that I will be getting better, but that they will continue to suffer because the research that they need is being blocked by hypocritical pseudo religious zealots who do not give a damn. Their medical conditions deserve at least research as much as those conditionsthat are similiar to sports injuries. In the just society, for which we are all working, there would already be treatments based on stem cell research. That day cannot come too soon.

8. Absolutely, and when they put in a titanium knee next year, I will have
a non paralleled strategic anti-patriarchal weapon. I wonder if I will have to register it with the police dept as a dangerous weapon!

3. Told ya so, neener!
Yes, they've made a lot of progress in the hardware they use, and if you're still having pain at the other hip, they'll probably revise that one sooner rather than later.

This country will be DECADES behind the rest of the world once we get the lunatics and cruel bastards who suck up to them out of office and keep them out. We've lost so much time already, and NIH grants are drying up all over the place, but especially for anything that uses stem cells.

Welcome to the third world.

14. You were so right. I am absolutely amazed at the difference! If only
jocks were put out of commission by diseases for which stem cell research could be the cure, I am sure that we would see great strides in treatments. We simply must throw out the Neanderthals.

Yes, we really need to get that stem cell research approved and happening. So many people would benefit.

26. Hi, mom cat! I was wondering where you would be by elections!
It still seems a bit of a miracle to know how much you've been through in the last couple of weeks, and that you may be out and about by November 7.

Very much a reason to celebrate.

It's great to see you back here before we all sink or swim together in November.

Best thoughts and hope for a thorough return to health, with no room for doubt. You've earned it.

49. Hear heart. Thanks for those words of caring and encouragement!
I fully intend to be at the polls in person to vote for my progressive Senator Kennedy and my awesome Rep Capuano plus our next Govenor Deval Patrick. I wish all DUers had such great representation. It would be such a different America. One we could all be proud of.
I think that the vibes here are conducive to healing, if healing is an option. I feel so lucky that I can heal from what happened to me and that I have all the access I need to excellent medical care. I hope that what we are doing here will help that dream come true.

25. My wife had the same thing done two years ago
Things went smoothly for her too, with one exception - they cracked her femur in the process.

The surgery took an hour longer, the incision about 6" longer and the recovery time about a week longer.

My wife's reaction? "Who cares? I'm all right, aren't I?".

A week later she was up walking around the house, a month later, the crutches are completely gone.

They have this hip replacement thing down to a science.

38. And speaking of Titanium metal rods...
I saw an Xray of my wife's hips and leg after the surgery. She had had other rods implanted around her femur many years ago (congenital hip problems).

When I saw the Xrays, I was astonished. It looked literally like an antenna tower. Rods, hoops, screws, you name it.

You'd never know it by the way she gets around now.

Health and long life, momcat!

50. I bet she can really boogie! This is what all medicine should be like!
This is my second hip replacement, and the Day before surgery I was up on a ladder painting the exterior third floor of my house!
You are so right. The x-rays of these implants are quite remarkable and absolutely facinating to study! I hope that all of our stories will help encourage anyone who is hesitant about the surgery to take the plunge. The first few days are a bit rough, but yesterday, I walked across the street to a neighbor's house for lunch with only a cane! Not too bad for only two weeks after surgery!
Give your wife the heavy metak hippie titaniun rod salute from me!

It is so touching that I am filled with happy tears.
You are especially such a dear heart. I know that you are swamped trying to save our right to vote, but you still make time to check in on a limping mom cat and those it our community with more chronic and severe conditions. This DU spirit is what keeps me here. I came for the politics, but I stay for the people!
